This old gardenweb thread from years before I ever joined sums up the Gardenia experience of many gardeners. On this thread, I think ROBERT said it best. Growing up in Alabama, they grew easily with little care. It must have been the magic spot, because I’ve tried myself (as a house plant) up north, and no luck. I miss the beautiful scent! They are tempting, but beware! They are on my “never try without medication first” list.

They don't even do all that well in my very mild winter climate. There seems to be a "sweet spot" for being able to garden with gardenias and it doesn't cover a good 80% of the US!

Thanks everyone. I shall need your advice to avoid disappointment. I have more than my share of that with heavy Clay soil and dry summers.
