Dining Room - need help with wall art/accessories!

last modified: 4 years ago

My dining room is small 12.5 X 11.5. It was olive green & I wanted light neutral colors. I had the walls painted SW natural linen, new dining room furniture (inherited) & light fixture. I’m struggling with how to finish the room. My ideal room would have texture, simple art & window coverings. I will be replacing the floor with hardwood (light-medium color). Any ideas would be appreciated!

Your chairs look great. Well done. So sorry about that mirror but that one looks good. I can’t see the new fabric very well but the background looks pretty white and that might look too kitchen like for your DR. And too cool with other warm colors. When you hang the mirror it should be at bottom no more than 5-6” above buffet. Don’t hang it too high. Accessorizing the buffet will be easy after mirror is hung.

My progress slowly continues! Finally hung the mirror and styled the bar a little. The room has evolved differently than I had originally planned. Any suggestions on window treatments? Thought I’d go with bamboo & simple panels. Not sure that would work anymore. Any thoughts on bamboo versus simple Roman shades??? I’m stuck again!!!

You are doing great! Love the big gree pin the vase. Just slide vases and liquor tray over toward mirror a couple inches. Layering is more interesting. I think a woven shade that matches color of trim with neutral drapery panels each side would add finished touch.

Now is good time to find some silver mercury glass vases/pots for your table.

I just ordered some samples for the blinds. Thanks for the direction on matching the trim because I wasn’t sure if I should stay the same or go towards an ivory! I love the example in the pic you posted. Also, really like the mercury glass idea on the table too. Thank you again for all your encouragement & suggestions! Do you have any suggestions for wall decor on opposing to walls, they both have doorways?

looking great. love the idea of woven shade. wonder though if a pattern for the curtains would be interesting, perhaps the same fabric as the seats. are you still thinking slipcovers for the heads of the chairs? if so, matching those with curtains would also be nice.

With multiple chair paint colors and pattern fabric chair seats keep window treatments simple. I would consider a soft sage/Gray on the walls though.

My original vision for the room was all neutrals and texture. The room morphed into aspects I wasn’t expecting to do (color on the chairs & a pattern on the fabric). I would still like to do slip covers on end chairs. Haven’t found any inperson & am hesitant to order online if I have to ship a large item such as a chair back.

Also, the whole downstairs was just painted, so the wall color is a keeper.

Any thoughts in these bamboo shades?

Look for “woven shades”. Blinds.com is a good source.

This is Montego Bark. Might be good match to your woodwork. Get samples before ordering.

Hi... I enter late to your room. Your top shade has texture too earthy-warm if you want a dressy type room.

If dressier, repeat more the neutrals of chair [is it grey-green?] -- 16 x 31" H

Everdebz. She has wood trim around windows so trying to visually incorporate that tone. Then hang neutral drapery panels either side.

My thought is if blinds are medium tone wood/bamboo -- a light rod would keep room lifted, and linen/cotton blend with:

    Just saw your post Flo.

Can't help notice how the room had 'dark wood' sort of, and was lightened..... and will floors be wood later? to me, no wood/bamboo at windows. Have a bit of appealing fabric at windows?

I originally set out to lighten this room and not highlight the wood trim. However, I have not stuck with my original vision. I added the color in the chairs because the room felt so bland. But, when I return to original pins of dining room inspiration they all all pretty neutral. Yet, I can’t seem to achieve that. I have purchased and returned several curtain panels that were either in the beige family or off white and they didn’t seem to add anything to the room. The blinds I have in there now are absolutely coming out. I’ve also considered Roman shades. As you can see, I’m all over the board. I apologize. We will be adding hardwood floors, but about 6 months out on that portion of the project. The other contributing factor is my husband’s office is in front of home also so my window treatments need to work there as well. I’ve lost my direction for sure.

what is the background color of your fabric in the chair? I think that background could work as the neutral drapery panel. looks on the off white side? I wouldnt dismiss curtain choices until woven shade gets chosen as the curtain alone isn't the whole picture. plus you haven't chosen art for the opposite wall yet, so you don't have full picture yet.

was thinking and looking at more neutral rooms... how about a tortoise style shade, it has multiple colors and shades in it, very versatile, I have them in a front sitting room and just love them... and then white linen curtains, white will brighten the room up and also work in office.

one more idea to add more white... add a gallery of art to the blank wall of something with white mats and black frames... botanicals, as an example...

I love that idea. The background in the chair fabric is an off-white shade. And, I had some botanical prints I found on Etsy. Which wall would you suggest the gallery to be? This picture of the sample for my blinds seems similar to your suggestion. Do you think so too? Also, I received a sample for a white linen which I think may be a good example for the curtains . Seems like it would go well with the blinds, which would be open the majority of the time.

Hey Theresa, and anyone else - where would you suggest as an online source for those slatted wood/bamboo shades, with prices that aren't sky-high?

I searched a few blind places & Selectblinds.com has pretty good prices. Flo recommended blinds.com

That sample blind is pretty but has too much variation to my eye. The linen looks ok. I wonder if you need tighter weave so you don’t get sagging?

I bought my blinds at home depot, can't remember cost though, I know I opted not to have a backing to save cost.

as for wall for gallery, I think the wall across from the window.. I don't mind the variation in that shade style, I like it with the trim, but other styles could work too. can you put the samples with the chair fabric. just to get a closer up view of the chair too.

When I put samples with chair, I don’t think I love it. The idea of a tighter weave may be better! And the color of this linen seems too beige.

I may be the odd man out here, but I like it all together, especially the linen. I see all kinds of shades of beige, ivory and green... is that correct? I like it all, but there are plenty of other options. do you have other samples at home by chance? I think we just need to see options and then see what works best... I think its the right track.

Hi. I'm glad you circled back to your "new start" point, cause I didn't know...... I was going to post this before I read your post: "My ideal room would have texture, simple art & window coverings. I will be replacing the floor with hardwood (light-medium color)."

    last modified: 4 years ago

Question is.. what will the room look like with more wood [floor]? .. why remove blinds and make decisions....

I sorta wish you had art already.... also, what is the rest of your home decorated like?

    last modified: 4 years ago

I tend to agree that the large-rod blinds are too tropical/rustic.. or such word. The dining set seems smooth --and lighting doesn't fit with them either.

Just thinking that it might be different if walls had a slight grasscloth....

I do feel like I lost my focus on what I’d like the final room to look like. I am going to order the botanical prints for the wall to start with, since that has always been consistent with what I’d love to see in there. After that, I will focus on windows. The curtain panels are beautiful too. I intend to order some more samples for blinds as nothing else I have currently seems to fit. I am so appreciative of the suggestions & it is making me realize that maybe having something on the walls first may make it not feel so flat, and then I can decide if my original thought of neutral panels for windows will work. Any suggestions as to where to shop for botanical prints? As always, thanks in advance!

You're dining room looks lovely, I love the neutral wall colors. I believe these work by Avaulte artist Bronle Crosby would be a lovely compliment to the room. The first one is titled 'Birds Eye View" and is 24"x18". I believe the neutrality of this painting along with the pops of color would be a beautiful addition to the room.

This next image by Avaulte artist Bronle Crosby is titled 'Still Waters' and is 36"x26.5". The simplicity and stillness of the image would be a lovely feature to the dining room.

I would also consider looking at works by Avaulte artist Barbara Trcinski who creates amazing figurative paintings. These could add a lovely pop of color and be a beautiful statement piece within the living room. The first is titled 'Shondra in a Purple Dress' and is 20"x16". The warm colors of the painting would compliment the wall color of the dining room well.

The next work by Avaulte artist Barbara Trcinski is 'Chrysanthemums' and is 30"x24". Again I belive this could add a beautiful pop of color to the room.

If you wanna see more original by either of these artists or learn more about Avaulte here are links to Bronle Crosby and Barbara Trcinski's creator pages on Avaulte. Let me know what you think!

    Beautiful artwork!

Is there any formula to decide how large the artwork (gallery style) should be on the empty wall?

  • PRO

There is no formula per se. But there are some guidelines. And some common mistakes. Don’t hang grouping too high unless you are doing full wall. Some leave too much space between pieces. All paintings get flat and can get boring. Add a couple 3D or textures pieces. Mirrors, sculptures and display boxes to name a few. Try to unify with one or two colors in art. Or get all pieces framed in same frames. Black or gold works well. Save photos of arrangements that appeal to you. Pick favorite piece to build arrangement from. Those are initial tips. Here are some inspirations.

I’m leaning toward one of these sets with black frames. Would that be enough ?

what is the size of each piece? if you cut out six pieces of paper the size of each piece and center the grouping on the wall, that will help determine if you need more... hard to know without sizes. if they are large, say 11x13, 6 is probably enough, but 5x7s may be too small. you want the grouping to be in scale with the size of the wall.

  • PRO

I want to offer alternative suggestion. On that wall, doing a symmetrical set of pictures might not be best. I would suggest one larger piece of art. Here’s why. You will not be able to ground the grouping with a table due to space limitations in the room. Plus, you have arrangements on your buffet. So lots to look at already. One larger painting can bring things together and be calming. I will post some ideas later.

Found several that would suit your room so well.
