Don't paint brick. You are adding a maintenance problem. If the concern is that it looks "dated," there is a much easier and cheaper way to change the look. Change the mantels to something you think doesn't look "dated." (I would save the old mantels, since they probably match the rest of the house, and the next owner may have different opinions.)
