Children’s Calm/ Reading Nook Area

Looking for some help with a FUN project!! There are so many fun ways to do this. This is my first time posting, but I think this is a fun inspiring project so I’m curious to see what people come up with! We moved into a new home almost a year ago and there are certain rooms I had envisioned but not sure how to get started on this room. This is approximately a 8 x 9 area loft that overlooks our main floor that is open concept. When you come in our front door there are stairs going up to the bedrooms to the right and this nook area is to the left. I want to make this into a calm area for my kids (essentially a time out area for them to deescalate) / a reading area where I can display a few books to encourage them to read/flip through books, maybe I’ll even curl up in there to read! My kids are 4 and 6. We have built in desks for them elsewhere in the house. There is also a little door which leads to a small long closet I’d like to put lights inside and make a cute hideout.

what a fun area to decorate. I might add a low bookcase on the wall with the door as you walk into that area and then use blackboard paint on the low wall so they can draw on that wall and then add some kids art on the back wall and above the bookcase. add a fun rug and a couple beanbag chairs. another thought is to add a fun wallpaper to the back wall, I thought this was very cute. also adding a couple inspiration pics.

Thank you so much! Just from your inspiration I used a few things from around the house. That’s just a blanket on the floor but I’ll be looking for a rug!

hard to do with a door that swings inward, I think.

make sure to have some low-structure seating like beanbag chairs or oversized pillows (or the inevitable giant stuffie). and at least one lamp -- maybe a floor lamp with a few arms.

for the closet, I'd hang a strand of lights with a click switch and strew some blankets.

From you last picture, I think it can be made more cozy, calm, book accessible and a magical get away where two or three can curl up.

There will be practical considerations as well in regards to lighting, etc but consider the overall feel and then narrow down the specifics.

Ruggable has nice kid's rugs and they're washable. I used one with floor pillows around a checkerboard/tic-tac-toe coffee table in our Kid's Kave (along with TV and foosball.)

Comfortable seating. Lighting for reading or playing games. A small table and two chairs for board games. A bookcase. A plush rug. Electric outlets for lighting. (I prefer to have charging stations downstairs where they can be monitored). A hand vacuum so the kids can clean up.

Cute space. Folding play mat to act as a sofa along with pillows and stuffed animals...

This space reminds me of yours though not sure how they use the mini closet.
