My remote Naples condo remodel needs help...

The kitchen remodel is not going as planned. The contractor had planned to remove a portion of a wall but was unable to do so because of plumbing not being able to be moved. Unfortunately, the cabinets were installed according to plan with the wall removed. Now, there is a blank space next to the cabinets that I’m very unhappy with. Please, I respectfully ask that you not tell me to confront the contractor. By the time that I was able to see the progress on a FaceTime I was told there was no going back. The kitchen has progressed quite a bit since I was able to get this screenshot. I’ve been stressed over this remote remodel and its MANY issues SO MUCH! I would really welcome thoughts on what to do with this space. I put a red arrow on the area that I need advice on. Thanks so much!

    Sorry, love your navy blue.

I see nothing wrong with the extra wall space...could hang a cute piece of decor or art!

I sooo wish the contractor had told me about the blank space before the end panel, crown and the under cabinet light bar was in place but he didn’t. I think the wooden wine rack could have been fabricated at that point. I would have LOVED it!! But to put that in place now, is just not worth pushing the contractor for. He and his wife own the business and they, too, are so stressed because of the virus. We have never lived in the condo. The last time we saw it the prior owner was still in it. It is totally empty right now. That is why I’m trying to get the big jobs done now. I’ve thought about how maybe we should have waited until we were there to do some of this but this condo was gutted. We would have had to rent another place to stay in. So, in reality, this is the best way to do it if it wasn’t for a virus. 🤬 When we finally get there, we won’t even have a bed to sleep on. I have ordered two sleeper sofas and three chairs. Those take 8-12 weeks and they will hold them in their warehouse. 🤷‍♀️ julieste, I agree our health is more important than a condo!! That is why we haven’t flown down yet. 😎 I’m doing a lot of planning now because what else is there to do! Maybe, drink some of our nice wine! 🤔🍷

Wine snobs, my wine doesn’t last on a shelf long enough to be a problem, especially these days!

Kate, I know! But when my husband wants to open the expensive wine I always tell him to save it and we drink the everyday wine. He then tells me that our wine cooler is over flowing and brings out the better wine. It just seems like the two of us sitting here “alone” isn’t good enough to warrant it. I’ve made car pick-ups at Total Wine when we have a 50 bottle wine cooler full. I need to live in the moment. I mean, we do have more shipments coming from Napa! 🍷

Would anyone like to share their favorite everyday Cabernet or Sauvignon Blanc? Thank goodness for car pick-ups!

Very nice kitchen. I would tile the space.

19 Crimes Cab is a good table wine.

@terirwin-lovely kitchen. I'm here in Cape Coral-just over the bridge from Fort Myers. Where would you be flying in from? We're in a lot better shape here than the East Coast. I've finally started going out a bit more and find that virtually everyone is wearing masks. Most of the stores have mask policies as Odi mentioned. If you look for a direct flight on an airline that enforces their mask rules, you should be okay.

As to your dilemma, I'm not sure tile would work. You would have to remove the end panels and molding, add the tile, and trim them down. I like the wine idea if the space is wide enough. Perhaps your contractor can measure it and let you know.

agree with katinparadise. Tile up to the top of the cabinets would have been nice if before cabinets went in, but too late now IMO. Our daughter flew to Texas from Western PA with no problems. And this was a couple weeks ago. No problems since. So, not sure what airlines you have there going to Florida but I think it is probably safer than before! They are cleaning like never before!

Thanks kat and Flo for your input! We have direct flights through Southwest. We also have the companion pass (I fly free). Actually, I’m not overly concerned about the flight. The empty condo, food and being in the situation of not having a condo to isolate in, is my concern. We get emails from the FL community and this week we were informed that an employee in the community was diagnosed with the virus. I realize that can happen in our home community but we are, essentially, sheltering in our home (with the help of Home Chef). If wearing a mask was 100% affective then I’d have no issue, but they aren’t. I’ve read that these gators, that some people are wearing, is worse than nothing at all! So many people are asymptomatic, which is awesome for them, but that means the rest of us are exposed to them.
Yes, removing and redoing what is in place is too much, at least for now. 😉 When we get there and get settled in, I think I’ll have better idea of what to do, if anything. I was just asking for ideas. I am so thankful for the different options that this forum has given me. 😀 btw... Rodney Strong cabernet and Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc is our daily go to during the week. Dariush and Quilceda Creek are the Cabernet/red blend that would be an EVERYDAY wine if we hit the Mega Lotto! In the mean time, we keep them in the wine frig and enjoy them occasionally. Cheers and good health to all! 🍷😎🎉🙏

Don’t know much about wine, know a lot about the coronavirus, and I think your kitchen looks just great exactly the way it is. Don’t overthink it.

Glad you enjoy Kim Crawford Sav. I’m from Marlborough, New Zealand, surrounded by the best wine in the world, feel very privileged. Wine doesn’t last long on our shelves either 😂😂🥂🥂cheers

Forgot to mention, love Naples, remember the ship voyage from Naples to Stromboli, my families birth place. Memories I’ll cherish forever

I think that taking the blue tile all the way to the ceiling would match the tile above the stove, and it would actually balance the space quite beautifully. I think that crowding some object in there would just look crowded, because it's such a small space.

Irene, I don’t know you but I sure wish I sitting down with you enjoying a Kim Crawford right now!!! I know that is New Zealand wine. They are so reasonably priced for such a nice wine. I’ve tried other Sauvignon Blanc but his is one of my favorites, clean and crispy with just the right amount of fruit. We have not been to New Zealand or Australia but hope to in the future. We would be in Scotland right now if not for the virus. Love the picture. Thanks for bringing a smile to my heart! Wait, I just remembered another favorite and we had it for dinner last night. I wish there was a bit more left for dinner tonight! Cheers 🥂

Goldberg Long, I totally agree with you. For now, I feel like I missed the opportunity to install it and I’ll wait until we are able to get to Naples to decide what is the best choice for the space. Thanks for joining the conversation and giving your thoughts...

Whitehaven is great, go there a bit, over a hundred different wineries here

I’m showing off now, a bit of lightheartedness, we will know at 5.30pm today if we go into further lockdown with cases of Covid in the community, so waiting with bated breath once again

Somehow, I had to repost that👆

Anyway, Irene that looks sooo wonderful! Since your last post I’ve finished the “small” amount of Whitehaven that is left from last night. We’ve tasted wine around the world. Someday, we will come to New Zealand.

Irene, it’s so interesting to see how grapes are grown. On the island of Santorini they grown the grapes on the ground. They make the vines into basket shapes and it helps to collect the dew from the moisture in the air since they get so little rain. In France they grow the grapes in soil that is basically rocks. The wine that is grown in South Africa is so good but it doesn’t transport well, so we aren’t able to enjoy the true flavor of it. We went to Portugal because we love tawny port. It is the home of tawny port. The process was so good to see and enjoy! 😋 🍷 Cheers across the world! 🥰

I’ve been to Marlborough, Martinborough, Kumeu and some of the vineyards in the Auckland area. The fact I couldn’t buy a margarita in NZ 35+ years ago introduced me to the Montana vineyard, which goes by Brancott here in the US. Marlborough was orchards then, but quickly changed to vineyards.
These are the ones in my rack right now. Usually have some Nobilio, too.
I miss Spy Valley, and a couple of others we could only find in NZ, but we have plenty of NZ options in Arizona.
    Cheers!

Irene, I was typing as your post can in. Best wishes with the virus. The world is trying to cope with it. 🙏🙏🙏

Bsgibbs wow, thanks so much for the post. I will have to check out those wine. Soon! 😉😉🤪🍷 Is the Nobilio that you speak of a NZ wine? I love the Italian Nobilio and Brunella del Monto Celle!!!! Spelling 🤷‍♀️😂

Yes Nobilo is a NZ wine

Oh, wonderful! Thanks, another choice to add to our list. We love the Pinots from Oregon. What a fun forum to keep our minds off the virus. 🦠😢 Wine and decor, what could be better! Cheers and good health 😊🍷

Oops. I misspelled Nobilo. They have Sav Blanc, too.

Oh well, the spelling isn’t important! It’s all in the terroir! Wine language... 😉😉 Anyway, after a glass or two, it’s all good! 🍷

Will your contractor build you a wall hung vertical box-style red wine holder for that narrow leftover wall space?

Marylut, thanks for your thoughts! I think the best thing to do is take in all these wonderful ideas and see what the space looks like when we are able to, literally, stand in the kitchen. I’m so hoping at that point I will be able to clearly see what is the best answer to my dilemma. Keep the ideas coming! Thanks so much!

good plan. We all stress over our remodels when they don’t go as planned, and if your contractor can’t replace the end cabinet with a wider one, then creativity and lots of quality sleep will bring you a good solution to your dilemma.

P.S. I love all the wine recommendations on this thread. Cheers!

There are bigger problems than this. I think it doesn’t look that bad, but my suggestion would be to either run the blue tile up to the ceiling (and preferable use quarter-round edge pieces to finish the raw edge), or hang some art tiles on the strip of wall — framed or not (I think it’s too narrow for wine storage, and that’s a terrible way to store wine anyway).

Another idea is to go to have a custom mirror cut and framed (simple, dark frame) to fit that space.

Or a custom art piece (this is glass):

Also, you could stack up a series of small, square photo frames:

You could continue the blue backsplash upward, but I would probably choose a tall narrow piece of art or an interesting kitchen-related wall sculpture (intertwined metal salad servers, looong twisted soup ladle, something amusing). I love the beautiful glazed decorative tiles shown above.

Thanks for your additional ideas. P M where can I find the tiles you are referring to? I especially love the flower tile and the row of tiles. Thanks

Less is more. It looks fine as is .

@teri winter, #1 tile is from Honeybee Ceramics (honeybeeceramics.com).

#2 and #b3 are from Motawi Tile Works (motawi.com).

The trio of glass tile stacks is a custom artwork, listed at https://robinevansstudio.com/products/tall-floral-wall-art-set-of-3-buddies-series-made-to-order

Terirwin just wondered if you made it to Naples. I’m on Marco and it seems our visitor numbers are increasing daily. With curbside pick up and outdoor dining you should be just fine. The weather has been cooling off lately so I believe our worst humidity is over

Joseph I have long admired your work on this site. Marco is hopping now with new construction and real estate is moving quickly. I am glad you have expanded your market.

I love the art tile links posted. Thank you, P M. What a treat looking at the Motawi tiles!

I think the blue tile up to ceiling or just leave as is- I think it looks fine plain. Those long tiles posted above are beautiful but I think they'd call attention to that area.

I love how this chat went from design to wine.... :)

Terirwin~have you tried Kono Sav Blanc from New Zealand? Goes great with seafood and is very reasonable for you and hubby to enjoy on the lanai.

It’s always a risk to have remodeling or building done if you cannot be there. That said, your kitchen looks good.
Hang an interesting narrow piece of art, a large wooden spoon or fork, or some other skinny decoration there, or
continue the tile up to the ceiling.
