What’s wrong with doing picture 2? I’d call two or three replacement window companies, and if they do dog door accommodations, get some bids.

Nothing. Picture 2 is what I want. I have called several companies and they want to put the doggie door in the orignal glass door, which is way too expensive. First company I called, I must of called 2 or 3 times before finally get a call back and the second company gave me an estimate over the phone which was way too expensive.

The difference I see is that your door and side windows are all one unit, is that right? Does that side piece open too, looks like it does. Your Second picture is a door in the middle and separate windows framed on the side .. which is much easier to change.

Yes, it's going to be costly to modify the glass in the existing door.

One option is to contact a carpenter, or cabinet maker, have them remove the glass and then frame out the lower section for the dog door. Then the upper section can have new glass placed in it.

Another option is to have a thru-the-wall dog door installed. I don't know how large your dog is, but the area to the left of the doors looks like a good place to put in a wall dog door.

Third option is to have a glass company install this door directly in the glass. I've used the Hale doors for years and they have quality products. (A small-tall door for my cats costs around $200 and we installed it ourselves.) If you go this route, show them the Hale info so they understand how it would need to be done.
