I’m struggling with rug selection...among other things. We purchased a historic 1880 home with some of the charm stripped. The previous owner removed some walls to open it up, which is great for light but I feel like I’m swimming in a sea of blue. I would like to add Colonnade cabinets in between the entry & LR to try & create some definition & historical elements. I am also planning on adding trim to all the doorway openings as well as toying with the idea of adding a picture rail as well. I love my curtains but feel like they are too short “10 ft ceilings”.

I like an eclectic mix of old / mcm. The chairs were built by my Grandfather out of black walnut the upholstery is tired & ready for an update. The shag rug in the pictures is long gone, poor choice with pooches. I don't want to have everything matchy, but am struggling to pick out rugs that will be cohesive. I tried a chunky jute rug without backing way back, i loved the look but not how it held up to vacuuming & dogs making beds.

Of course I’m on a shoestring budget and will be doing the work myself. I know I can’t afford to do everything all at once & I can’t physically do everything at the same time either. My mantra is patience! I just feel stuck on the rug situation & don’t want to have to replace again because I didnt think it through. My plan was to start with painting the LR a neutral beige, it just feels so dark. I think I linked my idea book for my living room so you can see some of my ideas & if I’m headed in the right directionLiving room
