2 door cupboard has built in range hood. It’s off center towards the left by about 3”. Wed like to install floating shelves on the right and just noticed how cabinet is off.

any solutions? Thank you!

    I would either

    1) Remove the cabinet and install filler panels to the right and to the left, so that the cabinet is centered over the cooktop.

    or

    2) Replace with a stainless steel cooktop

I would need photos of each wall of the kitchen, in order to advise you if floating shelves are a good idea.

Also, ask yourself: why do I want floating shelves? If your answer is strictly cosmetic, I would advise against them. For example, floating shelves over a coffee bar are useful.

My opinion is that the "floating shelf" trend will pass. They do have their downsides: in general, you cannot store the amount that you can in a closed cabinet, things have to look pretty and well organized, and the items need to be dusted.

I lived in my house for 15 years without noticing the sink was off-center of the window by a few inches--until we started a remodel of the kitchen. How long have you lived in the house without noticing the cabinet being off? Even with floating shelves on one side, I doubt any one else will notice.

The best thing, as mentioned above, would be to replace the cabinet with a hood, and sice you have the space, make the hood 6" wider than the cook top. You have a win-win--it will center the hood and provide a wider capture area. Then use your shelves or order a matching cabinet for the right side of the hood.

Thank you everybody! All comments very much appreciated.

The kitchen was just installed, appliances just arrived, and we didn’t notice until stove was in and we went to do shelving measurements.

I think the panel filler might be easiest to repair the problem at this point. Thanks so much!

I am not sure I would notice it in the second picture, it only became noticeable to my unprofessional eye when you put the sides.

Question to Jan: why remove the cabinet- are the under the cabinet hoods not as effective ( just asking for my own knowledge)

Undercabinet hoods and cabinet covered hood inserts tend to have smaller front to back capture apertures. Ideally, the hood should overlap the pans in width and depth by enough to capture most of the rising and expanding cooking plumes.

Cabinet standard sizes come in 3" increments.

Check the plan and the install - someone either ordered or installed the wrong size cabinet somewhere and you ended up 3" short on that wall. Replacing the cabinet on the left and moving the hood 3 inches should fix the problem.

Figure out who screwed up and they can pay the cost for fixing it.

Check the entire kitchen - you may find that another run is off by 3" and you just haven't noticed yet. Most likely the people installing the cabinets noticed this issue and decided not to say a word and hope you wouldn't notice. For the cost of a kitchen - it needs to be done right.

Who designed the kitchen? if not you then who designed it has to redo cabinets to make it right

You may be able to get this refunded.

Who designed the kitchen? Was it designed this way? Offcenter to cooktop?

Or was it designed correctly, but installed incorrectly?

Who ever designed the kitchen screwed up big time. I agree remove the cabinet and get a proper stainless hood but you will still have issues with placement.

I am OCD enough that would drive me stark raving nuts.

(And open shelving would too, but you didn’t ask about that. 😉)

Get a spacer to make it even and call it good. Nobody’s going to notice but you.

It looks terrible. I would either replace that cabinet above the stove with one that is 3" wider and then it will be centered as it should be (three inches wider on both sides of the cooktop will look fine, as it will be centered) or install a range hood that is 3" wider than the existing cabinet, if there is, in fact, a hood available in that width, whatever that width is! The third option is to replace the cabinet to the left with one that. is 3" wider, which will push the existing cabinet over the cooktop into the center position above the cooktop. The result will look correct and properly planned. None of these solutions require unsightly spacers and wasting space.

Call the builder, there is no excuse for this to be off-center other than the builder calculated wrong, ordered the wrong size cabinet(s), and or was lazy and cheap and is lazy and cheap if he doesn't fix this!

@StudioXY - the OP posted 2 years ago. By now she has taken care of it, and I doubt the builder will be responsive 2 years later.
