Renovating our kitchen.

Renovating our kitchen soon and have drawn up some plans. Would love some feedback on the plan that I have drawn up regarding layout, work triangles, aisle space, etc. We are gutting our current kitchen and removing the wall between the kitchen and a small dining room to make a large 22.5 x 13.5 ft space. We are removing one small window and keeping 2 large windows. We are also making our living room into a large dining room just off the kitchen. We have a family room on the lower level as well as a rec room in the basement which is more than sufficient. We have a 5 level side split home so the kitchen overlooks the main level family room. I appreciate any advice, comments!

Could you please post a sketch of the entire floor? (In your case, maybe the floor below as well since it's open to the bottom floor.)

The sketch lets us see how the Kitchen relates to the rest of the home. It doesn't have to be to-scale, but it should accurately show how the rooms relate to each other and should include all interior & exterior doors. In addition, it will help us see how traffic flows in, around, and through the Kitchen. Label the front entry and family entry. The family entry is usually a garage or side entry, but it might not be. It's helpful to know which door you use to bring in groceries.

It would be helpful if you posted a layout of the existing space that has the actual measurements labeled instead of cabinet/appliance sizes. Forcing us to "count boxes" and try to figure out partial boxes, etc., takes time, is prone to error, and, to be honest, it's a lot of effort. Some people will pass on by b/c of the effort required to figure out the actual dimensions. In addition, when you take actual measurements, you will find that the inches aren't going to be exact or in exact increments of six (or even 3).

    Other questions...

    • Tell us about you and your family and how you plan to use your Kitchen. All-adults? Empty Nesters? Children (now or in the future)?
    • Where are you flexible? Can the windows you're keeping be modified (change size, move)?

The above and more are discussed in the Layout Help FAQ.

You've got a giant gas range back to back with a extra large sink. That creates a bump/congestion zone. All the space to the right of the range is unused. The micro is very far from the frig. Often, things from the frig are what you want to reheat. A 48" range gets a 52-54" hood and a good sized make up air system. Pretty expensive setup unless you use it.

No sink directly across from the range yu need min 48” in the aisle across from the range and 60” where you have seating at the island,IMO no home needsa 48” range and the noise from the hood will be unbearble very quickly Unless you cook for 20 daily a 36” range is all you need , I run a catering biz with a 36” all gas range no problem.

I don't find having an island sink centered on a range to be a big problem, since we usually prep to one side of the sink. However, a workstation sink is also for prep, and a 40" aisle, in this case, is more of a problem with back-to-back sink and range. If you move the fridge to the left, then sink and range are offset, and fridge is more convenient to DR and stairs from the other areas of the house. It's also closer to the MW drawer. I'd add a second trash pull-out to the left of MW, and increase the width of the drawers to the right, for convenient dish storage. The trash pull-out can be shared with the coffee station.

Thanks for your suggestions.....if I move the fridge to the left, it opens into the main aisle and also blocks the view to the second window. I am set on the 48 inch range since it has a regular size oven as well as a small secondary one which I would use quite often. A 36 inch range's cavity is too large and doesn't get me that second oven. I could move the workstation sink to go under the window to the left of the range and put a smaller sink at one end of the aisle....I could then add a microwave drawer near the fridge in the centre island. I could also move the fridge to where the coffee station is but then I would have a partially obstructed work triangle. What do you think?
