When to prune Amethyst Falls American wisteria?

After years of letting it go wild with few blooms, last year my husband hard-pruned our 20-year-old American wisteria with good results (pic). But we can't remember when he did it, or how. Right now, there is a final flush of a few blooms and seed pods. Is this the time? And what gets lopped? Many thanks.

Thin mature growth in winter as desired and head back new growth in summer to control size.

Does it bloom on new growth? Many years, we only had blooms on the tips of the vines.
