as a start, I might consider rearranging furniture so its more condusive for conversation. this would be the cheapest thing to do. I would place the couch facing the fireplace, flank the couch with the two wing backs facing each other and then adding a coffee table and side tables. then place the console behind the sofa. once you get the layout, then move on to other changes. I would remove tne window coverings and keep it simple with neutral curtain panels. that will make a big change to the overall look. agree that the wing back chairs could use an update. I would suggest a leopard print for both wing backs. a couple inspiration pics that combines green and leopard print. I think could be a good update that still has traditional elements.

I love Theresa‘s idea of bringing in the leopard print on wing chairs, as well as the plum accent on pillow. Would be fabulous with your sofa. And I love your sofa just as it is, btw.

I also love the wing chairs. And honestly, they might work as they are with a couple of green lumbar pillows. I would try a mossy type of green color, in a velvet.

If you wanted to layer a rug to give more definition to seating area, etc. - as one example, this rug picks up on your throw pillow colors.

I like your sofa where it is, anchored on that wall. I think your seating arrangement works. A coffee table would connect the dots. Maybe a large square shape.

And solid colored linen curtain panels, hung high - on black curtain rod. Maybe a flax color on linen.

Hi Teresa - My problem is that the room is only 11 foot wide and 14 from door to fireplace so the couch at the door with the table behind it doesn't leave much room to walk on either side so it seems more like a barrier than an open welcoming space to the fireplace so I think I am stuck with the couch on the wall however much I love that look you sent. I am playing around with the wing chairs to see if I can't get them somewhat more conversationally but not having a lot of luck however, your concept is really neat. Thanks again. Geri

As I mentioned in my comment above, I think sofa is good anchored on that wall and your seating arrangement is fine. As I suggested, I think a large square coffee table would be good, and when you have company you can just scoot the chairs forward a bit. Before purchasing a coffee table, you can measure out sizes with painters’ tape on the carpet - to get a feel for how various sizes could work. Or alternatively you could use boxes, etc.

And definitely try the moss green velvet lumbar pillows on the wing chairs. I don’t think you need to reupholster them.

I added the rug that I had used above to your full room view pic. It’s a rough view, because coloration is a little off + rug is not rotating. But it is a general view, gives you the general idea.

i totally see what you are saying and the space issue. thank you for the extra pictures, helpful. my only suggestion is to move the one chair so it faces the fireplace floating in the room and position it close to the sofa so a side table can be at the end of the sofa but the chair can access the side table too. leave all else the same. of course add a coffee table.

I also like celerys ideas on a fresher feeling space too. not sure what you are drawn to but clearly a few different ways to change the feeling of the room.

I would move the table that’s under the window. It causing your chairs to look like they’ve been shoved in a corner. Use a smaller table under the window and move the chairs closer together. That will create a conversation area with the sofa. Use straight panel curtains close together some color s your wall color, but with some texture to them. Good luck!

What is the style that most interest you, country chic, transitional, contemporary? I also would rearrange change your seating and have it float at the window wall and the console table placed at the opposite side with the chairs flanking the sides but in front of console. Will you repurpose the table?

How many people will be using the room at the same time - If you need the sofa plus 2 chairs then they should be rearranged for better conversation. What will the room be used for?

There seems to be a lot of furniture and decor items in the room, for its size. How wide are the couch, wing chairs and long table? Is there anything that can be removed? Even removing the plant pots on the floor would lighten up the room which to my eye looks too full.

I would remove the drapes and the matching pillows, and not replace them.

Your window is very beautiful. Its width, low window will and its orientation to the sun. I wish that I had a window like that to sit at on a sunny day, especially in winter. But unfortunately the long table is the only piece of furniture to benefit from it, and all the seating is in the dark areas of the room.

Also, when the fireplace is going, most of the seats are pretty far from it. So to take advantage of the nicest things about your room (the window and the fireplace) I'd suggest this arrangement.

Put the 2 wing chairs in front of the window where you can sit and enjoy the sunshine. Angle them any way you wish. Move the large plant to the other corner where it can get more sun. Move the couch closer to the fireplace. Don't worry about centering anything on the windows or walls at this point - we'll help you balance the room once you have the seating pieces in a comfortable spot.

Your room colours would be more attractive if there was a clear major colour in the room. Right now, there are about equal amounts of greenish blue, blush pink and gold. I suggest greenish blue as your primary colour and that you paint your walls a paler, grayer version of your couch colour and use the blush pink wing chairs as your accent colour. Looks like you took your 3 colours from the curtain fabric, which can work sometimes but your proportions are not ideal. Here's an idea of the wall colour but not sure I got the shade of blue-green right - the couch looks more blue in some of your pictures and more green in others.

Start with fresh eyes on the space. Designate a temporary "stash" room and move everything except the pieces you say you're keeping there. For a complete update, I would move the two side tables right and left of the fireplace, move the table from the window to the sofa wall, and float the sofa facing the fireplace just out of the door swing of the French doors. You might consider removing the doors to acquire more space and pull the sofa back even more. The two wings are a pretty heavy element in the room and may be holding it down. Set them in front of the fireplace, photo and list for sale on FB Marketplace and other outlets you have in your locale. Until they sell, place them side by side in the window. Now you can start bringing things back in. Put the plant in the window with the chairs. Hang the clock 5" above the mantel. Hang new art over the table and plan to add a new lamp on the right of it. You can do lamps, art, mirrors over the wide tables. I would add a round coffee table, more new and brighter art, floor to ceiling drapery panels and you've got the basics done.

The room is 11 ft wide. The couch looks to be an average length (7 ft). That would only leave 2 feet on either side. Too tight unless the couch is 5 feet or shorter.

A lighter wall color would brighten the space, say, a butter or cream color to keep it warm and not compete with any other colors in the room.

For lighting - if you don’t have wiring for a ceiling fixture, you could use a swag plug-in chandelier/fixture. One that is dimmable.

You could put lamps on end tables flanking sofa.

Another lighting idea could be wall sconces over fireplace, flanking your art.

There are also plug-in sconces. In that case, one way to camouflage wire is to paint it the same color as the wall.

I also vote for repainting the room either a complimentary color to the couch or a neutral ivory. And a rug that pulls the colors together will help. Giving that table the best seat in the house doesn’t highlight the beautiful window, so that should be replaced with a smaller table so the two chairs can come closer together to enjoy the view.

Sorry but I disagree with painting the room a light neutral colour if the OP wants to keep both the sofa and the chairs. The blue and pink contributions to the room are about equal, and it looks imbalanced. IMO the room needs to be repainted in the blue/green colour, suitably lightened and muted of course.

I think she's ready to say goodbye to the chairs, partim. Meanwhile, they can stay until she finds a buyer; then new additions (chairs or bench) can be added.

The chairs are staying. The paint is staying.

Hi, I am going to address your original question on recovering or using slip covers for your wing chairs.
Option 1: Recovering/reupholstering each of those wing chairs is expensive and costs on average about $1,000 each depending on fabric and labor.
Option 2: Slip covers for wing chairs that you can buy online at places such as Amazon, Wayfair etc. Costs less than $50 per chair on average.
NOTE: Make sure to carefully read the exact dimensions for each slipcover or it will not fit your wing chairs. Here’s an example of how it looks. Hope this helps.

Hard to update room if keeping everything other than wingbacks. I find the valance and accessories could use more updating than the chairs - just leave and add nice cushions. Highly suggest (from experience) not going with a spandex slipcover. The fabric is terrible. For the cost to reupholster, or purchase decent slip covers, I’d look for a nice second hand chair. It also won’t feel as cramped by the fireplace with one chair gone

To update room if interested, add cushions on couch to comp chair(s) and new art above - perhaps botanicals for a softer feel.

I’d replace valance with linen like drapes (Ikea has great prices) and rethink the console’s accessories for a more updated look.

Consider table lamp or two and a coffee table. Just giving examples below of what is out there second hand- try Facebook Marketplace.

I would advise a less bulky coffee table; perhaps wood and glass or metal and glass.

Move your console table under the picture behind your wing chair and move your wing chairs closer in front of your window, with a small round table between them. Tgat way you cozy up the conversation seating, still leaving room to enjoy the window.
