Did I make a mistake with my quartzite counter & talavera backsplash?

last modified: 6 years ago

I have a Spanish style house so I decided to use talavera tile as an accent in my kitchen backsplash. I have installed Yosemite Falls quartzite counters which I love. I aslo like the tile but am not sure if they look OK together. There is only one wall that has a backsplash. The doors in the kitchen are not in yet but the doors on either side of the arched window will be glass and the rest wil be white (Benjamin Moore distant grey). I have a large island that has the same quartszite counter but it is walnut (natural dark color). Here are two pictures of the tile with the quartzite. The walls are not painted yet either but will be an off white. I like the look but a few people have told me that they do not go together. I would like to hear your opinions.

Thank you. That was exactly what I was trying to get away from, the sterile hospital look (in my opinion) of an all white kitchen.

I absolutely love the Spanish tiles you chose! Honestly, I had to really look to see what the issue is, and I think it is the gray in the countertop that doesn't tie in with the tiles. If you love both the tiles and the counter I would say to keep it.

Unless you want to change the counter top to match your tiling. My mother in law lives in the southern part of Spain. And her counter tops are black with little flecks of white in it. Something like that would pull the black out from the tile if you want to change it to go together better

    .
It sounds like you are happy with it, and are second guessing your decision.

Also, the window is beautiful and I almost want that teal color to continue up just in that space.

cpartist Thank you so much. Exactly what I was going for.

I’m with Erica, it would look great if you would continue that teal tile to the ceiling around the window!

What's done is done. I just don't understand why renovators don't come to the Houzz forum BEFORE they install instead of after.

I might have considered a patterned tile that would have imparted a pattern with reduced colors. But right now my question is why the cabinets appear to have a yellow undertone, the countertops gray in color and the wall paint blue undertones. I think you will have to adjust something.

BeverlyFLADeziner, Thank you for your comments. I did consider a black and white tile like you are showing but in the end I wanted a little more color. The rendering you did does look good. As to the yellow and blue undertones, neither the cupboards or wall have been painted yet. I am painting the cabinets with Benjamin Moore Distant Gray which I think will bring in the grey in the quartzite and tie into the black in the tile as well as the little bit of grey. I have been planning on painting the kitchen walls Benjamin Moore Alvira like the rest of the family room, living room and dinning room which is one great room including the kitchen. Although I may decide to paint the arch an accent color that picks up one of the colors in the tile, or even a paler geen (teal). Any suggestions with that?

“A few people” have told you ”that they do not go together.” You are happy with it. End of story. Enjoy your new kitchen.

Perhaps paint the wall around the arched window the same teal green as the tile. I wouldn’t bring in another color or pattern. Perhaps someone can photoshop that for you? If not, it’s only paint and a very small area, easy to change.

I think the tile and counter work together, but I think the wall color is throwing things off right now. Without seeing it, it's tough for me to say, but I wonder if cream walls will add one too many "nearly white" colors. (White cabinets + grayish white counters + cream walls).

Is the window itself an arch or is that a false front, I can’t really tell on a phone. I link it’s unique in a good way. I’d keep it for now.

I also think you should continue the tile up to the ceiling around the arched window, but I now see the "arch" is a facade(?), or cornice(?), so I would paint it the same shade as the teal tile, like someone else said. Also paint the wall surrounding the window the same color so the arch will appear to be part of the arch.

I love it as it is! It has a 1920s feel.

Here is the wall above the sink in the same green. You could paint it.

houssaon Yes that does look good and will look even better once the glass doors and cabinets are in and painted. Thank you.

Anne Duke and Nancy Walton- The back wall is an arch but it has a green house window attached to it that sticks out past the outsdie wall. Thanks you for your comments.

Yes to teal paint, and painting over it if you don't like it! It's a gorgeous color you have in that kitchen! :)

Before you paint the upper arch area a teal to match the tile I think I’d try a light teal first and see how you like it. The dark teal over the arch seems a bit over bearing to me and also makes me question why you didn’t just continue the teal tile all the way up. Doing a lighter version of the teal makes it look intentional and not as heavy. My 2 cents. Keep us posted:)

Yes that makes sense. I did not have the tile continue all the way up becasue as you said with the dark teal paint, I thought it would be overwhelming. I do like the idea of the lighter teal or the color of the rest of the wall in the entire open plan which inclueds the dining room, living room and family room. It is called Alvira White and has a slight grey tone or even a slight beige tone depending on the lighting in each room. Thank you.

I like the teal color and would suggest painting it inside of those glass cabinets that flank the arch window. It will be a pretty pop of color.

I think the teal tile carried all the way up would be best. It wouldn’t be too much. It that’s not an option I’d go with an exact paint match so when looking at it the eye naturally moves all the way up and that arched window stands out. Your choices work well together.

I think you would like the tile all the way up the arch. I agree it would draw your all the way up. I also think that it is the little things like continuing the tile to the ceiling that make a kitchen look expensive and really finished. I love the color!

If you can get the teal tile supply, I also vote to bring it all the way up.

Thank you for all your comments and advice. Rather than continuing the teal around the arch which I think may be too dark and overwhelming, I might paint an accent wall with the teal color. There is a wall on the left side of window wall that will have open shelving made from the same walnut as the island. I am thinking of maybe painting that wall with a matching teal color. . Comments?

I think doing the whole wall would be too much. It's too dark and that's such a lovely spot filled with light. What's going to go on the shelves? I'd either try for some items (cups, plates, recipe box?) that have some teal to tie it in, or skip the shelves and find some killer art to go there instead. Love the cabinet (and the kitchen)!

I wouldn’t paint the wall. I think you will be sorry that you didn’t tile around the arch. The glaze on the tile will reflect light. I just think it looks unfinished to not finish the tile.

    louroberts thanked blevyva

I would tile around the arch. I just did a remodel and tiled all the way to the ceiling and it looks great. Think about the flow of the entire sink wall . Love your tile choice.

Seems that most people think I should tile (or paint in the same color) the arch way up to the ceiling. Once I get the glass and white doors in and the walls painted I will photoshop how it looks tiled all way up to the ceiling.

    • jslazart yes, I was thinking of kitchen items in colors that tie in with the tile. I have decided that painting that wall would be a mistake and make it too dark as you said and also it would then really limit what colors I could use for items on the shelves.

blevyva the teal tile is actually flat. The decorative tile has both gloss and flat in it. The teal color in both the decrotive tile and the subway tile is flat.
