Need help with updating ranch style and curb appeal.
Comments (10)It is hard to determine where the front door is. Now I see the red dot! Is the carport to the left or to the right? Is there a concrete block wall? Here is a cool looking exterior with ideas for your home: I like the white facia rather than the brown I think your house has. The concrete wallway surroounded by round stones and the plant material all look appropriate. If that is a concrete wall, maybey you could replace it with a fence as in photo. If you do convert the carport to a garage, this would be a nice door treatment: I also like the wood privacy screens and the railings. Although I like the wood and steel cable as suggested earlier. It would also be good if you could reduce the amount of driveway....See MoreNeed suggestions to improve the curb appeal of our 1920 mission prairie style home
Comments (51)I get to start off the new year for your fine list of helping hands. To list a few: rinqreation showed truly wonderful sites, but it just made you weep, right? libradesigneye was on target with the little cube comment, suggesting large clusters. Perhaps, if you found another home for the light green thingies, and filled in between the darker green cubes with the identical species, you would have a neat hedge, which you could then ignore so that it attains its natural beauty and height. Enprov's fences are what would suit you well, out by the street, paralleling your property line. My turn: I love the poor unused terrace to the right of the front door. I would not use it either, until I removed it from the neighborhood. A nice low-branched tree between you and the side street and the neighbor's carport, and then, perhaps a row of hicks or hatfield yews across the front, separating you from the mailman and Jehovah's Witnesses. Comments (34)Ill see what I can do to find some photos that convey the ideas I mentioned in my comment. But first let us all know a little more info about the lot and how you intend to use the spaces. I assume the photo is taken from the sidewalk. What is the orientation of the elevation? For some reason Im assuming that it is facing South. Im also assuming from your photos that the living room is the space behind the 4 unit window and the dining room is behind the 3 unit window. Is there a driveway to contend with as well? Here in Arizona most of the houses of this age and style are on tiny lots so the front yards often need to serve some function other than just a lawn. Do you have much of a backyard? Do you need the lawn as a play yard? Would you ever want to sit out front on a small patio or would you rather put the money into developing the back? If so, I think just changing the landscaping and walkway and possibly developing a pergola over the existing porch could be very nice. I would still add a tree. I dont know much about Florida at all, but most of the houses like yours that I have seen in Los Angeles or Arizona have colored concrete walkways, patios and often floor slabs, usually brown or red and often scored into a 12" square pattern. I see from your photo that you have wood floors indoors instead of concrete. I would suggest you either use a nice colored concrete or brick for your exterior paving. Either would look good when you eventually tile your roof. I personally would not introduce another material like stone although never say never, something like large slate pavers could look very nice. I just did a quick scan through photos on this site of Outdoor spaces, Mediterranean style, All areas and saw some nice examples of paving patterns and styles. Simple is best in my opinion, but take a look and see if you like anything. Of course, try a search of Florida as well and you may get some landscaping ideas that will work for you and your climate. I just found a few photos I took of an old hotel in Phoenix with the type of concrete floors I mentioned. The style of the place is different than yours of course, but this is what I have most often seen on houses similar to yours here in the west....See MoreCurb appeal - Red brick Ranch
Comments (18)I have seen a dramatic and sophisticated look using dark colors on trim with orangey red brick. Try a dark blue/black for trim to update it including garage, window trim and doors, and rework the porch, it looks so sad and caved in. The interior porch color can be a lighter blue gray to match the black trim. These colors will update and unify the house. If you can afford to change the garage style do it. No shutters, go modern! The metal pillars on the porch are a distraction; if not load bearing, get rid of them and open the porch up, if not get a box pillar style to cover them up; add a decorative bench and put in some foundation plantings. Landscaping will change the look of the property, give it depth and make your home more inviting. It would be worth it to pay a landscape architect for a master plan and gradually add to it each year to stay in budget. Nice mid-century home, enjoy it!...See Morelazidazi
