Woodworking Design Dilemma Living Room

staining on mantle is blotchy HELP

My brother built my mantle and stained it with Varathane premium wood stain. Once up we noticed the nail holes that were left so we filled them and stained over. Now the mantle is blotchy. Should I add another coat to even if out?? Add a satin Polyurethane finish?? Help please!!

We ended up lightly sanding the entire mantle and did one additional coat of stain.

Did you do a finish (poly or something else) coat, or just the stain?

I'm not familiar with every product, but my understanding is that you cannot just "stain" something. You need to also do the finish coat.

We used VARATHANE Fast Dry Wood Stain
