Why use either? What’s wrong with wood? My fire pit is great for burning tree and brush trimmings.

Depends how much use you think it'll get. A 150k BTU gas ring will blow through a 20 lb propane tank pretty quickly.

Nothing is like a crackling wood fire from a fire pit.

I presently have a propane fire pit. We use it every once in a while. While I like a wood when in a cold climate, I prefer the ability to quickly start fire on a warm evening in So. Cal. Thinking about the Tavola. fire pit which requires gas line

FFS, there are pros and cons to wood burning too. we have both kinds. a gas one for our little covered porch is great for rainy times, and we can just turn it on for 1/2 an hour and then be done with no cleanup. the cons of a propane tank is that you only get about 4 hours if you want a kind of big fire. honestly I wish I had a gas line for ours! if you think you will use it a lot, go for it.

wood burning firepits are awesome, but it always feels like an event. there's the process of keeping firewood on hand, getting a fire started, getting rid of the ashes, having smoky clothes and hair when your'e done. and you have to be in a bigger open space to keep it safe (so for us that means we don't use it in the winter because it rains a lot). and on top of it all, we usually have burn bans at the end of summer, but we are allowed to use gas pits.

@Van Zelst Inc Your bluestone capped fire pits are stunning. Those really are statement pieces and make it worth paying a fortune for a gas line.

I am so envious of some of these gorgeous fire pits, but even the small ones are $$$$! we bought a cheap one (by cheap I mean $275) and I have to say, it's meh. it's not very nice looking and we have to perform a weird ritual to get it running. so don't cheap out like we did!

I’m following this thread with great interest. If we planned to light a fire outside 2 nights a week for much of the year in Northern California, it sounds like a gas line would be worth the expense.

Due to Covid, my daughter sits around the pit and visits with a frIend or two. So we went ahead and paid for the gas line. Unfortunately, the fire pit was defective so we are still using the propane pit.

cath_del, yes I think it would. from what I understand, you can only get about 8 hours of fire out of one propane tank, depending on how high you turn it up.
