Will you be removing the wallpaper?

It looks mismatched because it is. It’s tough to have tan/bone look good with gray.

Your fireplace has some Art Deco details, so paint it all white or all the same color.

• Do you know what the original finish on the surround might be?
• Does the FP work?
• What are you doing about a fire screen?

The right screen could really enhance the fireplace.

Shame you didn't like the art deco fireplace. I agree the problem is the wall color, not the fireplace.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, we plan to remove the wallpaper. Thanks for sharing the photos - and one colour looks like it could provide the best solution. The FP does still work, although we don’t use it. Its a mix of glazed and matt tile.

Can you afford a sledge hammer? That is one ugly fireplace, and I see no redeeming features or any "art deco" wanna be details. Break it up and drywall over the hole for some useful wallspace.

I would definitely go all white until you can figure out what you are going to do with it.
