Mine is in a 5 gal. pot with good potting soil. It has thrived. It will get black spot if not treated.

Hi, Joey! I grow 'Rose de Rescht' in heavy, probably alkaline or possibly neutral gray clay, and it does fine for me. My zone 8 Mediterranean/Continental climate, with wet winters and dry summers, will be different from yours. I don't give supplementary water, or spray, and the rose does pretty well under those conditions, not suffering badly from fungal disease. It does need water, whether rain or irrigation, to bloom, as opposed to just surviving. I hope your rose does well for you! It roots easily from cuttings.

I also have a young RdR that I just recently got - does anyone have any thoughts on it’s preferred sun exposure? For example, can the blooms take hot afternoon sun, or do they prefer afternoon shade? Any experience with it’s susceptibility to powdery mildew?

OK folks, RdR is a beautiful rose with a great fragrance. BUT I will warn you all that she does suffer from what is called the "Damask Crud" on her leaves. After her spring bloom her leaves get very diseased looking. Not black spot or powdery mildew but just cruddy looking. It does eventually go away and she reblooms but for a while she will look terrible, lol!

Needs spraying or will be a black spot mess in Chicago, also somewhat susceptible to spider mites. Does well in less than full sun, extra winter hardy, happily reblooms all summer. On its own roots, it tends to send out a lot of runners. In a few years you will have a thicket.
