That is not a good look for any but 15’ ceilings. It’s far too detailed and too tall for simple low ceilinged rooms with simple cabinets. It’s totally out of character.

My carpenter did something very similar in my home. A small return will look great.(Mine are not stained to match yet).

I am not a fan of such thick molding.

I think it is what it is. By adding such deep molding you are drawing attention to it.

Right now your eye scans the kitchen, and then moves on. At some point you might redo, and that would be the time to get rid of the soffits.

I like your floors and paint, looks like you have been upgrading the whole space. I would leave off the molding.

Thank you for the input so far! I should have added in my original post that we took that idea pic to a local custom cabinet and molding store and asked them to help us scale it down. Where that example has 7 pieces, ours will only have 3. I’ll attach a better photo here. We plan to paint the soffits to match the trim and cabinets.

Crown on cabinets should not be 40% of the height of the cabinets. That’s much too top heavy. All of the examples look squashed into the ground from the weight. Crown should be around 15% of the total cabinet height to remain proportionate.

Unless there's a lot going on inside the bump out that would have been great space to add more cabinets too. I've enjoyed having cabinets to the ceiling before and they're great for storing all that occasional use/awkward size stuff.
