Wardrobe solutions between IKEA and $$$ ?

I’m looking for suggestions for a standing wardrobes as a closet solution for our house.

Most of the custom or semi-custom options were outrageously expensive — priced at $10k and more. Even the solutions at the Container Store were surprisingly expensive.

We decided to go with the IKEA Pax system because they were unbelievably cheap and we would be able to assemble a system that would fill our space really well. We know they aren’t the best quality but we figured that they would do, at least for a few years.

However, IKEA is completely out of stock and there is no word on when they will be available.

Any one know of semi-customizable wardrobe solutions that are priced between IKEA and the outrageously expensive brands?

Our space is about 159” wide and around 87” tall. We were planning on 24” deep but could go to 30”

For our other room, we are looking for something about 70” - 80” wide, 93” high, and 24” deep.

Thanks for your suggestions!

I have clients who have Pax for 15 yrs no issues and some are even in kids bedrooms. IMO better design and pricing than California Closets .I am not sure what you mean by Ikea is out maybe just try another Ikea store.I find sometimes with Ikea I might have to wait for some parts but I can still install the boxes or frames and get hanging rails for Pax probably .

The IKEA website is pretty good at telling you the availability in the various stores and seems to have Pax units available online also -- though I appreciate it depends what specifically you are looking for. In terms of quality, I wasted several years turning my nose up at the idea of IKEA furniture until I actually tried some. Not everything they sell is great, but I am a particular fan of the Pax range. Some of our wardrobes are ten years old and show no signs of falling apart, even after being taken apart and reassembled.

I know that doesn't answer your question of what alternatives there are, but if it were me I would check other stores, check online and be prepared to wait a bit before I looked at other options. It is also very easy to add other components later if they are not available right now.

Hi everyone! Thanks much for your comments.

On the IKEA product availability, I’ve tried looking at both their delivery and store pickup options in our area — and there is nothing available.

They have a note on their website about low product availability but you can’t get an ETA.

We are a bit pressed to get something, as we are moving back into our house after a remodel and an overseas move and we don’t have any closets.

We have some temporary hanging bars up, which would be fine for a little while, but without an ETA on the product we’re concerned about waiting indefinitely.

So, that’s why we’re looking for possible alternatives. We’d love to have the Pax, but after months of patience spent on a remodel that got delayed by COVID and an overseas move, we really want to get settled.

    Any ideas for alternative products?

Guess it depends on how much you want to spend? West Elm has some armoires, Room and Board...

I know absolutely nothing about them but they popped up on the search: https://www.contempospace.com/bedroom-furniture/wardrobe-closets/wardrobe-packages.html

ON line is totally different than in store shopping. I just did a huge Pax install in Miami Beach the only thing not in stock was some of the insert pieces which my client could live without until they come back in stock.

Patricia, that is interesting to know. IKEA wouldn’t even let me move forward in the online checkout process until I removed the items out of my cart. We went to our local store and they were out at the actual store too. Perhaps it’s a regional distribution issue.

I’m not sure on pricing but semi handmade makes door fronts for ikea boxes. Have never used it, so can’t attest to it. Have seen a few bloggers go that route (Daniel Kanter).

For fun, I tried ordering the Pax frame online and it tells me to remove it due to shipping delays. The doors seemed to go through, but the frame did not (color did not matter).

Have you looked at Home Depot's closet systems?

I just got some estimates from the container store for avera and home depot. both companies have completely different products and designs yet the price quoted for my his and hers walk-in master closet were both the same. in the 11k-12k range. one charges tax, the other doesn't. and installation charges were included but im not sure. i am sure i can price out the PAX (i secretly have) for a fraction of the price but i am trying to convince my husband that the PAX is worth it. He doesn't like IKEA products and he is not at all into DIY. We could hire someone for the install, so will keep at it until he agrees!

as with in stock products, i agree with what others have said, the online order is tricky but the product stock is usually pretty accurate on the website and is updated multiple times a day. my sister was waiting for a crib and dresser recently so I went through the website tracking with her. that being said, how will you get the PAX home? its better to have it shipped, hands down. unless of course it is in stock in store and you can rent a u-haul (is it $19.95 per day plus miles) and load and unload yourself!

    good luck, keep us posted!

oh and the only other option i considered was Costco. i love Costco. they have The Closet Factory, however they don't have service in our area so that was a no go. but i am calling them for my car insurance later this week!
