Wood boxes are meant to store wood. In the photo, it looks like they are not deep enough to store the wood properly, or that the wood is pulled forward to look pretty for the photo.

If your wood box is deep enough to function properly to store wood and not just be decorative, you should be able to keep the wood stored there longer term without having to worry about it getting wet.

If you want to get fancy about it since there isn't going to be a roof over the area... you can also consider having doors mounted on your wood boxes.

We are doing something similar to this. I'm thinking wood could be stored under the hearth or sitting wall. The doors might not work for this design.
