Thanks GN Builders, but that doesn't answer my question...I have seen this info. I already have a window and I know that it complies with all required codes. I'm also aware that the well needs to be at least 9 square feet - that's not a problem. But I'm trying to figure out what the width and height of the well should be. Is 50" enough for a 48" window or does it need a few inches on either side for installation? And should the bottom of the well be flush with the bottom of the window? Does it go down further, and if so, how much further? Thanks.

I would have it a couple of inches below the opening of the window so water doesn't leak in.

the answer will depend a lot on the type of window installed -- whether there is any sort of exterior carpentry, say.

Here's an article about terracing the egress window well. It also talks about drainage.

There's about 6" space between my window and window well (on each side). And the bottom of the well is 6-8" lower than the window. I had the contractors install a window sill and leave a gap for snow.

If this is a new build, are you able to raise the basement so the windows are above ground?

Cherie, you can raise the foundation by adding a few courses but you will still need a window well to meet the egress because the bottom of the egress window opening can't exceed 44" from the finished floor. Also, keep in mind that the more your foundation is raised the more steps you will end up with on the outside.

Talk to your architect and see what issues if any you be faced with and what the effect it will make as it pertains to everything else if you raise your foundation by X amount.

This is what your architect should be dealing with and we have no info as to why you need a well at all. As for the rules I think GN hit them all.
