den decorating layout

Den pictures here is 17x13. Really 18 but I don’t count the fireplace bc it would get in the way of couches etc. how would you design a cozy den. Our huge couch is not fitting. Doors cannot move.

I would get rid of the paneling on the wall.

If you can't do that, paint it.

Unless you’re going to either carpet this room or put a VERY large area rug in it, I agree with removing or painting the paneling.

In this kind of a long narrow room I would either try to create two small conversation areas, or use the classic “2 matching chairs flanking the fireplace, one on either side, across from a sofa.”

Can you repurpose your “huge” sofa for your basement rec room?

heres an idea for layout...idea would be a sofa with chaise on long wall, tv stand on wall under tv and pushed toward fireplace so tv can be put on the stand to the left of window. chair on angle facing fireplace. assuming door is behind chair on wall with window.

Beautiful floor! How do you plan to use this room? How many do you want to seat?

Thanks! Just got floors refinished. Hoping for 4 people if possible.

Conversation? Reading? Tv viewing? Office work? Naps?

Conversation, board games, tv. I have two young kids so naps are out the window!

I’m just filled with questions today...

Would you play board games at a large coffee table?

Do you need a separate area for play and toys?

Do you want tv above fireplace or on a console?

Which directions do windows face, and will this light limit where tv can be placed to avoid glare?

I think the panelling is competing with the floors and maybe consider painting the panelling for a fresh and modern look. I did mine years ago and it made a big difference.

I’d add an appropriately sized sectional (with washable covers or go with a darker color or leather) placed along the long wall, so everyone can curl up on and add a rug to ground the space

A comfy chair in the opposite corner near fireplace, with a floor lamp and it will be a great reading spot

TV is best over fireplace and add a console under windows with a bottom self for baskets to hide toys, or store puzzles, etc

A large square distressed coffee to play games on and being distressed it will be forgiving

Look at lots of inspiration pictures and see what styles you are drawn to. Map out your room to scale and see what and where pieces can go, and define your needs.

    This is great! Thank you

I was hoping to do tv on separate table. Put large mirror above fireplace. That coffee table looks awesome. Any idea where I can get one like it?

The best coffee table with young children is no coffee table - or an ottoman style.

Some good ideas from Maureen. Does Theresa’s floor plan appeal to you? What size is your tv? Console for tv could have good storage for your board games, etc.

Is it one--or more than one--window on same wall as door? How much wall space om either side? Perhaps you could show us a sketch of floor plan including placement of windows and doors?

TV could work on a corner console unit on right of fireplace and add an occasional chair opposite sectional/couch with a side table and lamp.

The coffee table was from an inspiration picture so don’t have its details. There are lots of distressed coffee tables with very different prices and sizes. If you search on line, you’ll find lots of choices.

    Not a Pro.

If you decide to paint the paneling, paint the baseboard heating the same color.
