Ash, Maple, and Birch

I was going to title this discussion "trees and baseball, but I wasn't sure how many readers would even open it. To the point, I was watching a baseball game and one of the announcers, who played mlb, said he went from using ash to maple to birch for his bats. I knew the first two were commonly used, but birch was new to me. I don't know the species used, but are these three genera generally of similar strength, weight, and density?

The announcers comment actually opened a whole set of questions. As an example, is there a conifer that might be used for making a baseball bat? Isn't white pine considered very strong for its density and weight?
