I can't find any pictures :-) but I noticed sugar maples in my town that have what I call a non-typical leaf shape, more of a 'star shape' leaning toward that of a sweetgum. I could only surmise that they were from a SM cultivar. Of course I have no way to prove any of this, just an observation. :-)

I've seen lots of fallen Sugar Maple leaves over the years with the contrasting veining, just like in your photo.

FWIW:

Here is two leaves from the same Sugar maple tree. First one can make it difficult to discern. Every color of the spectrum can display during senescence.

The sugar maples on my lot have leaves just like the ones you show above, Bill.

Are yours a straight species Ben?

I seem to find these kinds of stunted leaves on the trees planted around town, so am assuming they are a cultivar. The outer most leaves generally are quite large and look nice and full.

My woods dug species tree puts out 'cookie cutter' maple leaves almost exclusively. The ones below are bottom of the barrel, seasons end that were left towards the center of the tree.

They're certainly straight species. It's just individual variation (or different lineages). MOST are like what you showed, a few look more like the "textbook" S maples.

There's a big difference in sap sugar levels between different trees, from what I understand.

I noticed several sap collection bags on the silver maples last spring. Not large scale producers, just private syrup lovers. :-)
