another section of edging in back..to get your bearings..in this pic with the maple the "crooked" edging starts on the right of this section..I moved 2 "green" volunteers and 2 tiny bits of Blue Mouse Ears next to the stones..as usual I put stones next to BME to deter squirrels..spring will be fun!..

It does look wonderful! Stone and plants show each other to best advantage. It is like doing a jigsaw puzzle setting them just right. Great job!

peren..thank you!..most people don't realize that it's not as easy as it looks to get a good fit (I know you know)..stones don't "bend" much Lol..now that I have defined boundaries I'm inspired to fix any planting gaps..pull weeds..spread compost..and make everything pretty..I wish it was June instead of almost October..

The gardens are looking wonderful! I know setting stones is hard work, I edged my blue spruce bed with stones. Gotta be proud of the results so far, I love it.

It's looking great! Order and flow makes everything look bigger and encourages both eye and feet to follow. Do you have an unlimited source of stones? That's my problem now - everywhere I used to collect stones I can't get to anymore because it's grown up in weeds and brambles or no place to park after they widened roads.

Sherry..thank you!..my husband was overwhelmed when I pointed out just where we needed edging..it seemed like miles..but we've made progress and it feels great!.

"Order and flow makes everything look bigger and encourages both eye and feet to follow"..well said!..and so true..it's so much nicer to stroll around this place since we created the paths..some of the stones were here..we took them apart and reset them..we didn't like where they were and how they were arranged..I brought some from my old house Lol..my next door neighbor gave me some..my sister's neighbor gave me some..a guy that worked on our garage door has property with stone and told me to call him if we want any..I wanted to go get some but my husband wouldn't..he said "let's use what we have first"..he was right..we're not out yet!..but what's left is getting smaller and uglier Lol..check Facebook, Nextdoor etc..I've seen it for free..

Nicholsworth, I know how much work it is to deal with rocks too. When I first began doing some gardening, I found lannon stones everywhere I dug. Every size you can imagine. The house has lannon stone trim and many houses near me are built from lannon stone. I sometimes I think they just threw all the extras in my yard, haha! Anyway we used the stones to make the garden border and build up the retaining wall.

Lucky you D Jacob. Our yard grows rocks but they aren't good rocks--large grain quartz but only hand sized or a little bigger. Just the size to damage the lawnmower blades or throw at the house/car. Have had busted car and house windows. Now we pull the car into the garage when we are mowing and try to mow away from the house. We also do a lot of rock picking.

djacobz..thank you!..I love everyone's compliments..I've found pieces of the stone used on our house in the garden too..but not nearly as much as you've found..you put your finds to good use..stone walls are classic..yours looks great..stone is challenging but I love the look..a pic from today showing the other end of the "crooked" section..see the curves by the blue dots?..I don't mind the crookedness..we had a little rain which is great..

Nicholsworth, the retaining walls were already made when we bought the house, but they need fixing from time to time as they shift with rain and snow and pressure of the dirt they are holding back. What we did find has been used as edging in the back as seen in pic and also all around the front beds. We also used huge stones almost completely covered by grass for a pathway to the back fence gate. some of them were in place with only circles of maybe 6” showing. When we started pulling back the grass, the stones were more like 20-24” across! We also found stones under railroad ties that made the garden border at the time of purchase. Why would people bury these lovely stones when they were so easily available? Well, it was apparent they were not gardeners——-the back garden was so overgrown.....it looked like a jungle. Only things left when we cleaned it up were an old lilac and burning bush. I have ”extra “ stones in the garage from big and heavy to small. They get used as shims on the rock walls and the large ones for rebuilding the walls.

ps I also use the stone to brick in little hostas from the squirrels. :-)

debra..rocks are so useful aren't they?..we have so many..I told my husband.. "someday when all of our rocks are in place let's count them!"..the number will be big..I know it looks sloppy but if I don't lay rocks around newly planted plants to stop squirrels I regret it..
