How to " thinify" and slenderize this fat fireplace?

Ugly fireplace, too big and bulky. Can I take it down and or modify it in some way. Want to get rid of the wood stove in the process.

That room and fireplace are awesome!! Try "washing" the brick with a color to tone it down.. Then beef up that mantle with some heavy rustic corbels and a mantle piece... throw a beautiful rug down, keep the sofa off the wall, add a couple of oversize chairs and ottomans... you've got your own piece of heaven there.

I think when you add some large furnishings to the sides of the fireplace it will not look like it juts out as much. Kinda how I like to surround myself with hefty people, then I don't look so big ;)

2 bright colored vases with yellow flowers, or you can put medium white lanterns. On top of it add some frames or a big pop up frame if you would like :).

I concur with Sustainable Dwellings. You could also consider cladding over the brick with large format tile in a light to medium color which cut down on the business of the brick and incorporate a wood mantle along with it for accent and definition.
