Help me select a dishwasher

I’m building a house and unfortunately our builder offers only Frigidaire appliances. I’m less than impressed with the selections, in particular the dishwasher. I am looking at taking their cheapest standard option and changing it out after closing. I am a heavy home cook, so we run the dishwasher a lot! I have heard great things about Bosch and Miele, but I’d like to keep the budget around $1000. Suggestions welcome and appreciated!

Fwiw I have installed 4 Frig Gallery dishwashers in family homes over the past 5 years and I've gotten zero complaints from the family members. I'm using one now. Maybe they're no Bosch whatevers but I wouldn't just install one and throw it out a week later.

The Frigidaire gallery dishwasher they offer has a plastic interior which I was told is very hard to get dishes dry. I’m tired of hand drying everything that comes out of dishwasher.

Frigidaire dishwashers don't do well in Consumer Reports's tests and its dishwashers aren't very reliable. However, I wouldn't buy the cheapest just to discard it. The Frigidaire FGID2468UF ($629) received scores of Excellent in washing and drying and it was reasonably quiet. If it fails after a couple of years or you don't like it you can always switch it out for a couple hundred bucks gamble. The least expensive Frigidaire model not only performed worse it was also judged noisy. There are reviews on Home Depot, Lowes, and Best Buy websites. Use a good detergent as that can make all the difference.

I went from a mid-priced Bosch to a Frigidaire Professional series dishwasher. The Bosch was better. After the Frigidaire dishwasher shorted out, it was replaced with another mid-priced Bosch. My teacups got clean again. Actually two of the four Frigidaire appliances in that kitchen had electrical failures. They do seem to do well with fridges and freezers. I wouldn’t spend top dollar for their dishwasher, but they’re easy enough to replace if you don’t like it.

    Bosch, indubitably.

Why don't you just tell the builder to put in what you want?

Asko is a nice unit. It has turbo drying and tall spacing.

FWIW we have a Frigidaire dishwasher, stainless interior that we put in our new build. There was a hose incorrectly installed that we discovered immediately and once that was fixed we have had no issues. It cleans very well, and I try to remember to open the door shortly after it finishes which helps a lot with moisture. But even when I forget it's WAY better than a unit with a plastic interior in terms of drying. One recommendation I'll make for any dishwasher is bring dishes with you and see how they fit. Not just a dinner plate but bowls, glasses and multiples of each so you can see if you have to space things farther apart then the tines.

You should probably take the most expensive standard option that matches in size what you plan to buy. Then sell the builder option after closing.

When you say “standard” you mean included in the price right? Because of nothing is included you should not take anything. They can’t force you to buy a dishwasher to close...

I’m pretty sure they can’t/won’t close without a dishwasher installed. I asked for a Bosch to be installed and they said to take the standard (included) and switch out after close. It’s frustrating because with a new build I don’t want to do a lot of work afterwards to get what I want. That’s the point of a new build.

Ok, so my first comment was correct then. Since you’re basically already paying for one, get the best one and at least you can sell and recoup a few bucks towards the one you want. It is frustrating the way builders work and the kinds of things you’re ‘forced’ into but at least a dishwasher is an easy install. We did this as well with the dishwasher and washer/dryer and the builder basic ones were gone within hours of posting on kijiji. Just make sure you triple check the size of the openings.

Good point on checking the size of the openings! The nicest one they have is a $500-$600 upgrade which I doubt I could sell it for on Marketplace. I was thinking I should take the standard for $0 extra and buy a new one and install on my own. Yes, it is super frustrating how they work!!

Yes I wouldn’t pay for any upgrades at all, just take standard because even when re-selling brand new stuff people lowball you!

I agree that you should just take the standard and remove and sell it right away to get what you truly want. Just be sure that you'll have your new DW in time, with the current appliance shortage.
