Reading through the ingredients, it looks like it’s the regular downy beads with an added ”conditioner” (a quat, oddly enough; the same as regular fabric softener).

I don't like the fact that you would essentially be mixing detergent and fabric softener in the wash. Not really something that I want to spend extra money on.

I am very pleased with Down Defy; clothes are smoother and not as wrinkled. Only wanting a slight fragrance, I opted to purchase one container of each, scented and unscented, and then combined the two so I could still enjoy the full effects of Downy Defy but with a 50% reduction in fragrance. I recommend trying it; although, I agree, it is a bit pricey.

I have tried the unscented version in a front loader. I find that using much less than the recommended dose is sufficient to soften and smooth (I use 1/2 to 1 tablespoon). I do like its effect on towels, and find it makes them noticeably softer than downy ultra in the rinse water alone.

What I am really puzzled about, however, is downy defy’s tendency to stain some fabrics (like tshirts) which then need to be re-washed. I am trying to figure out if I am just imagining that this staining is occurring (perhaps I didn’t notice that the T-shirts were already stained, and the washing did not remove a pre-existing stain), or whether downy defy is the culprit. The downy defy package does note that if staining occurs, one should re-wash the item to remove the stain, so it indeed seems possible that downy defy does sometimes stain.

I was wondering whether anyone else has noticed this problem with downy defy?
