Wintercat, I grew it decades ago in inland Los Angeles area, zone 9 not far from Descanso Gardens. It grew decently and bloomed in wonderfully fragrant recurrent flushes with all-day, high, dappled shade courtesy of a tree in the neighbor's yard above. Never heavy shade. It was my favorite plant in that very small garden because the lovely, wafting fragrance. Over on the coast, a resort hotel had a large, very handsome hedge of it that I fell immediately in love with, but it was in full sun in a much milder climate at least some hours of the day.
