Some have survived many years in zone 8A, Virginia Beach, VA. But I would still try to find a protected location. Not sure, but they might be best high-grafted to Poncirus trifoliata.

High grafted PT, not a hybrid of, should do fine. You will need to protect the graft zone when it gets really cold.

I have one growing outside that has survived a winter in Olympia, WA, zone 8a.

It's in a very optimal spot on the south-facing side of the house, only about 3 feet away from the wall, in a protected spot, so that should also be taken into account.

(I do not mean it was covered, I mean it's not really fully out in the open, it is sort of tucked into a little niche so the wind is blocked)

There is a man 2 hours south of me in Vancouver who has a Changsha tree growing up against his house in a suburban neighborhood. The tree is a little over 5 feet tall. It has produced fruits, which he says are sweet (but full of seeds). The tree is very vigorous growing. Also has many big long thorns.

Thanks socal. Right, she's far enough north that the freezes are kind of a limiting factor on what may be grown in-ground. I personally never had an issue with seeds in produce....citrus, water melons, you name it. Those tiny white seeds in the so-called seedless water melons drive me nuts and I think they lost some flavor when they selected out the seeds.
