Below are 3 photos of a smoke tree that was first planted the spring before last, then replanted in almost the same spot this past spring (landscapers added a truckload of topsoil to 'dome' the bed and they wanted to raise the smoke tree up and move it over a couple of inches).

I assume it did not flower this second year due to the move. It sure grew alot. My concern is how to trim all these long new growths. Online trim examples did not show a shape like this at all, so I'm unsure what to do.

I want to trim this so it grows into a 'tall bush,' that is, I want it to grow to maybe 5-6 feet, where it might be better able to spread out over it's shorter neighbors.

The primary example had me trim it back to the base. The third photo does not show any bumps or black spots where, if cut, new growth would appear. Suggestions? Maybe cut all the long 'up-branches' to about a foot (cutting above a leaf), even if there is no bump?
