Fireplace update

I’ve been wanting a fireplace refresh and was hoping for a new mantel but we can’t afford it right now. My plan is to paint the gold on the insert black and the mantel white. We have a lot of oak in our house but don’t plan on painting it all BUT I think this would be one less piece of yellow wood. I thought about a mantel ’cap’ that would go over the existing wood but I can’t find a diy way to attach the wood cover to the uneven stone.

Any ideas?

Next step, styling it. I know the picture’s scale is probably way too big.

You could paint the mantle white as you mentioned, and also the gold accents black. I think that would look really good. Have you thought about maybe doing a limewash or whitewash to the stone?

I tend to think that making your mantle white will make the stones look "grimy". It works in Kay's posted photo above because the stones are light/white to begin with. If I had your fireplace, I'd paint the gold on the insert as you mentioned, but would leave the rest alone until I could afford a beefier, wood stained, mantel.

Beautiful fireplace. I wouldn't do a white mantel with your stone and all your stained woodwork. What about picking a color from your stone and painting or staining your current mantel until you can afford a beefier mantel as jewelisfabulous mentioned?

We have a stone FP...after many years we made a mantle...We scribed the wood for the mantle top and bottom. In order to do a mantle on a bumpy stone FP is to scribe it to the stone.

Also, the mantle you currently have would serve as an anchor for a new mantle as the new mantle can be installed over it.

All good points. @cliff_and_joann can I ask what hiring someone to scribe costs? This is a double sided fireplace so I'll need to do it on both sides.

I wouldn't do a white mantle with that stone. I would make it an espresso color to keep the tones in balance. And yes, black out the gold. Make sure it is heat rated paint for both applications. I like the size of the picture as long as it does not exceed the width of the mantle. Finish with some decor on mantle.

of scribing a mantel. We did it ourselves...all you need is a pencil and a string.

We made out mantel from walnut wood.

If your interested tomorrow I’ll tell you how we did it. I need my hubby to

instruct me. our stone is more lumpy than your stone.

this is it glued up with bungi cord clamps...it’s about 10 1/2” deep and about 3 1/2” wide.
