Help!!Naked verigated Lemon Tree

last modified: 5 years ago

I received a lemon tree in May as a gift. The tree was about 2 feet tall with some leaves. I replanted the tree into a large planter so she has room to grow for years. Now she is loosing all of her leaves. One or two a day. She will be completly naked within a next few days. What do I dooooo???I have kept her indoors. She sits in front of a window which receives a lot of morning sun.I am in Northern Virginia and plan to continue to keep her indoors so that I can maintain the environment. I have not given her any special attention, which she obviously needs.I believe one of my daughters may have over watered her.Picture included.

Pictures would certainly make diagnosis much easier, but from the limited info you gave us I would think you replanted it into much too large of a pot and probably too heavy of a medium so your medium is always wet leading to root rot.

Thank you. I was planning to upload photos soon. But your first diagnosis was my first thought. If this is so, do I uproot and replant the tree? What kind of medium do you recommend? This is my first citrus tree. I'm learning.

I would repot, we need more info on the trees environment. Where are you? How hot does it get? Will the tree remain outside or will it come inside for the winter? more you tell us the better advice we can give.

    First and foremost!!

Why are you keeping it inside? That tree belongs outside in temps that are anything above 35 degrees. It can handle it and in fact would look and feel a lot healthier than it looks now or in doors. You have to let it get all the sunlight possible it can get.

Second. way too large of a pot. Way to big unless you are growing it in a very porous mix like the 5.1.1 or similar.

Third if you grow it right, let it do it's thing outside, and I live in Ma. much colder than your area, it will eventually get nice and big for you. Here is a pic of mine since it was 6 inches tall)

This is it. About 6 feet tall after being cut back 3 times

I was keeping her inside bc it gets so cold during the winter here. I'm originally from. South georgia and we brought everything in during the winter.

It has gotten as low as 12 here in the winter.

Should I repot into a smaller pot? What size?

Also, the weather here is high in 60s and low in 40s. Would I be safe to set her outside in my sunniest part of the yard?

Also, do you have a recommendation for this large pot? My husband bought it thinking i would need it for something with larger roots.

Could I put my money tree in it?

Candice, thank you. I love this tree.

You can actually use that pot with creative ideas or a better soilless mix.

If you were to use mostly pine bark, a little peat and perlite you could use it because it would be fast draining and you would not have to worry about over watering. You could also fill the bottom up to the half way point with empty cans, or packing nuts and then re plant it into a mix with added perlite.

Not sure what kind of mix you are using but the more porous that holds its structure the better.

Then if you decide to plant another plant into that pot, I would say a pot just a couple sizes bigger than the root will do just fine. Let us know what you decide)

You said" I have kept her indoors"...I amconfused. What does that mean?

She should be outside in a sunny spot until you get a frosty night. When you know there is a frost coming then bring it inside for that night .

I have had the tree inside. I will take her out tomorrow morning and begin the process to fix the soil
