Do you have easy access to the water pipe that feeds this outdoor spigot somewhere else in the crawl space? If you do then you could install a valve that would shut off the water to the spigot. This would allow you to drain the water out of the spigot for the winter.

Not totally sure about the water pipe...thanks for the idea though! I will follow up with my plumber about that. It seems like the limitations of the crawl space make everything that much harder!

If you are going to hire a plumber, just have him put in a frost free bib and be done with it. Although having a shut off inside is always a good idea should you need to service the spigot.

Any suggestion as to which option you think is best?

I'd put the sock on it. I've had spigots that only froze in our worst winters here in upstate NY. And that was in a very exposed crawl space It sounds like you get a lot of heat in the area of the spigot.

Update for anyone who was following this: After having the one plumber out who told be there wasn’t space for a frost free spigot, I had another plumber out. He said he could put a 6” one on no problem. So, now I have a frost free spigot and don’t have to worry - as long as I remember to remove the hose, that is. Moral of the story: Always get a second opinion.
