Leaf Printing Party!

In late September I had some friends over to learn how to do leaf printing on fabric. There were only 4 of us, so we had room to social distance and wore our masks. One friend knows how to do this and she taught the rest of us after first sharing with us a throw quilt and table runner she made. We all collected our leaves a day or two before the “party” and got extra leaves to share. We used small 1-inch brushes and craft paint from Joanne’s and Hobby Lobby. I cleared off the counters in my kitchen so each of us had our own space. Here are some of our results:

Beautiful. If you use them in a quilt, do you have to do something to the paint to make it permanent?

Our teacher said her leaf prints have not faded away in her table runner and throw quilt. Personally, I would not use these leaf prints in a quilt that would get a lot of washing - as in a baby quilt. But I will not worry about wall quilts that will hang for a while then be rotated out. About twice a year (or when I think about it) I put my wall quilts in the dryer with no heat to just fluff the dust out of them.

The first quilt I will make will be indigo blue leaves printed on fabric with small blue prints and indigo sashing and borders. My green leaves are printed on pale gold and cream solid fabrics and will go into a quilt, probably with green batik sashing and borders to hang in my dining room.
