This small tree or shrub found growing right alongside a river has leaves about ~4" long turning really red now. What is it?

This shrub looks like it has entire leaf margins, whereas Diervilla species are mildly toothed, and Diervilla isn't supposed to occur in Texas, but there is just 1 observation of Diervilla sessilifolia in Lubbock. And then there's that button?
