    1. Good traffic flow, a space that reflects the clients personality, and proper lighting (ceiling light is ok in the dining room and kitchen, but not in the living room or bedroom). Lighting is often an afterthought, but is actually an important past of interior design.

    2. Individual attention to what the client wants and needs. Asking appropriate questions to arrive at that goal. For example, some clients like a lot of natural light, some clients like a lot of quiet, some like a lot of room, some like a small and cozy room, some like a lot of stuff in one room, and some people like a lot of empty space in a room. Some people will have a lot of company, and some people will have very little. Make sure to find out the persons style. Do they like traditional, boho, old world, mid century modern, eclectic, modern, casual, transitional, and so on and so on. Make sure to educate yourself about all the different styles.

    3. (don't know what you mean by "forms") Colors: dark colors can be dramatic and moody (and sometimes can be balanced with light and bright wall art), yellow can be invigorating, orange and red can be energy, green and blue can be calming. Also, the book Color me Beautiful, by Carole Jackson. Even though it is primarily used for women's clothes and makeup, it can also be used for interior design (warm colors used together and cool colors used together). It is out of print, but you can get it on Amazon.

How far are you in your studies? All of your questions will be addressed in your courses, and are so broad that it would be difficult to give a short answer. But I'll try.

Adhering to good space planning/ergonomic rules: Scale. Proportion. Balance. Rhythm. Once these are addressed everything else is personal taste. Color especially is very personal, and everyone is affected differently by it.

You are assigned the task of interpreting the dreams of others, within a budget large or not large. Your task is to maximize function and great looks all at the same time, providing long term value as well. Comfort is PERSONAL. Making a home personal ......thus means "them", not you. Their colors, their style, whatever that may be.

To that end? Take a course ( or three )in Psychology, and complement iwith a major study in business management. You will need both far more than any other answers you will get here . No, I am not kidding.

The purpose of a designer is to take someone where they never even knew they wanted to go, and get them there,..... better than they could have ever gotten there..on their own.

You will be a "shrink", a marriage counselor, a financial advisor, and more. You can take that, to the bank.

That old saying of "form follows function" is very true. In other words, first figure out what the space needs to do, then figure out how to design around that function, based on the aesthetic preferences of the clients, and the constraints of the layout.

How many people need to be seated in a living room on an everyday basis vs. a day in which you plan to entertain? Is that second oven really necessary, or does the convenience of having it on Thanksgiving when you're hosting 20 people outweigh the fact you won't use it much the rest of the year?

And how do you want a room to feel? Dramatic? Soothing? Colorful? Muted? These are all elements that come into play.

Plus, every room--in my opinion--should have the "four C's": clean, classic, comfortable, and custom. Even if that custom bit is just a couple of throw pillows that are beautifully trimmed, it's details like those that really make a room sing.

    Of course it is.

The question is, is the OP supposed to research the answer from texts or is he/she supposed to canvas the human beings that would live in these environments.

If the latter, then picking our brains is legitimate.
