Does this Maple tree need to be cut down?
I recently moved in and we have a tall (could be 100 feet, who knows) Maple tree in the backyard. IT looks really old but it's my favorite tree because it has so much character, and the trunk is really large. I'm guessing it's been around a long time through a lot of owners. Anyway, the top of the tree has full foliage so it seems healthy, although there isn't much growth on the sides because it had a poison ivy vine growing up one side (I've since killed that but digging it out and cutting the bottom section off). Anyway, the tree has two holes/bowls in it (not sure the term?), the higher one is pretty large. BUT as you can see from one of the photos, it appears to be non-structural since the main trunk goes straight up, the bowl is off to one side, maybe where a branch used to be. Anyway, my new neighbour comes moseying up to me mumbling about the tree having to come down, but I thought before I spent $3000 to get rid of my favourite tree I'd make absolutely sure that its necessary, so I thought I'd come to Gardenweb where I always get great answers from experts. So far I've only talked to tree cutters and obviously they're biased... Thanks for any suggestions!
