Kitchen Nightmare with Lowe's

last modified: 5 years ago

I have had an ongoing nightmare with Lowe's. It's been 10 months and they can't seem to get my kitchen finished. We are considering hiring an attorney. Their "install" manager can't seem to follow through on anything and once we started following up on what he was doing (since he would say things were ordered that weren't, orders went in wrong, etc) he has gotten belligerent and is now purposely sabotaging efforts to get this done. Their regional office got involved a few months ago and got the project moving and am hoping they will advocate for me again. We are 7 months past the "completion" date of the project. I have documented everything and saved all e-mails and it is obvious the total lack of concern and unwillingness to try to move to get this done. The install manager has been downright hostile. I have had no problem with the current crew working at my home (after getting rid of the first crew who was unreliable) Just the install guy who cannot manage a project to save his life and obviously has never been taught how to handle a customer issue. And his bosses at the store don't seem to care either. Once they got us to sign on the dotted line for $20,000, we were pushed to the back burner.

Anyone have any advice or experience with this?

There is nothing we can help with . You have done your job and yes contact the regional office again. As for what has gone wrong you don’t really give us any info as to what exactly was not done. IMO a large part of thei problem could be just supply issues with covid where I live all kinds of supply issues have been problematic and your timeline falls right in there .

Patricia - you are right. Covid accounted for a 2 month delay in the arrival of the cabinets. We ordered them on January 31st and completion date in contract was April 4th. Cabinets did not end up arriving until May 25th, but we totally understand that. It's just constant mismanagement since then. I may as well have hired the crew myself and done all the ordering of the cabinets myself as I had to check over every subsequent order. Things all didn't come in right the first time so we have had to place orders 3 more times for a few things each time. Can you imagine when they are already behind on this installation and I have to send them the exact things to order (the install manager says he has no idea about ordering so I detail it out for him) and then it takes them 9 days before he sends the order to the manufacturer! I kept asking for PO numbers and he would say they were ordered and I finally called the cabinet manufacturer directly and no order. Trust me, it's total mismanagement and even the store manager seems to not care and condone the horrible behavior of their employees since he never says or does anything about the situation, even though he has been made aware!1 The "designer", who ordered things wrong, said he refused to speak to me----he threw an absolute hissy fit in the store when I came in an calmly asked to see what was ordered---and the store manager had to come and "force" him to do his job. AND---of course, it was wrong again! Supposed to order fridge panels with right end finished and he had ordered left end finished. Even though he had my e-mail telling him EXACTLY what to order.

The first install crew was unreliable. Would show up and work only 4 hours and then not be able to come back for 3-4 weeks. Then when he was finally scheduled for the 4th visit he called the day before and said he was at the lake and didn't want to come back to do my install! I had countertop templaters coming the day after that and had already put them off several times due to Lowe's not having everything ready for templating, so I didn't want to put them off again. That's when I got the regional office involved and they were VERY responsive. They had a great crew here the next day. The first crew had installed cabinets in wrong places because he wouldn't read the design. Those had to be removed and scooted over to get all the right pieces in the right places, leaving holes in the backs of my cabinets where they shouldn't be. Installed the farm sink support incorrectly and we didn't find that out until we tried to put in the soap dispenser and he had built the supports so that the soap dispenser bottle would not fit under the cabinet. We had to buy a long hose to connect the dispenser elsewhere. We still are waiting on fridge panels and other trim pieces due to original design issues (designer designed for a counter depth fridge even though they knew we were getting a full-size fridge) And now the install manager has tried to put me off on install until late November even though he knew the products were arriving at my house by October 9th. He has a retaliatory personality and I guess is retaliating because I had to get his corporate office involved when the first incompetent crew wasn't working out and he wouldn't do anything about it. He won't answer e-mails, won't update me on progress, just pretty much does what he wants! And I would guess I'm not the only customer he is driving away from Lowe's and his managers at the store just allow it! Never seen such terrible customer service---ever anywhere!

Document everything and start talking to a lawyer NOW.

Thanks Elaine. Have you done this ? I just wonder if it would be more effort and money than it’s worth??? Especially since we are close to done now. I just have no idea and don’t want to have a whole other set of issues to deal with if we get an attorney. What might I expect? We pent $20,000 with Lowe’s on these cabinets. We are happy with the Schuler cabinets by the way.

I punched out a Lowe's bathroom in half a day that the Lowe's contractor couldn't finish in 8 months. Customers wouldn't let the guy back on site.

I've fixed fire-hazard solid surface countertops with burn marks because the Lowe's designer didn't read and comprehend the appliance manufacturer's installation instructions and failed to pull the cooktop cabinet forward.

Just terminated my health insurance with Lowe's. My ex-wife was an employee, but I turned 65 yesterday and went on Medicare so I ended my COBRA.

Haha Joseph! Well, that first guy was a mess. This second crew is actually very good. Someone told me that this is the crew they send out when people are about the sue LOL. So no problems. They know what they are doing and are personable. But we just can't get Mr. Install Manager to move off square one.

Congrats on the Medicare! We just have a couple more years. Funny how you don't think about it all your life and then the last 5 years is a big countdown to that 65th birthday!

I am hoping and praying that the regional is going to come through. Not only the regional manager but also the regional install manager. I think they know they have issues at this particular store and they are trying to get this done. We don't want to get an attorney but this has gotten ridiculous!

Any chance you put the tab on your credit card?

My Lowe’s kitchen was a nightmare also.

Buy from them, but use your own installers/contractors. They don't use the same guys each time, and there's no motivation to do well.

I’ve been dealing with the same issue. They should’ve finish my kitchen on 10/25/22. On that day someone was here to install my range and he told me we had a problem. The cabinet measurements were wrong and by range didn’t clear my cabinets. Then from then on it was one screw up after the other. Almost a year later since I hired them they still haven’t finished. I’ve spent hours (actually entire days back to back) emailing them, calling them etc. I’ve gotten all the way up the chain at their corporate office thinking I’d get help. Little has happened since their customer relations office from their executive services got involved. I still don’t have a completed kitchen, they are refusing to compensate me, said they were going to send new contractors because even they admitted the contractors they had sent had done shoddy work, then they said never mind we can’t sent new contractors bc no one wants to work outside of their normal area. They are trying to intimidate me with a gag order so I won’t tell others what they’ve done to my family.

Go directly to the store manager.

If no action, check in with your credit card company for a full refund.

    possible issues:

    1. incorrect design, incompetent designer
    2. incorrect room measurements
    3. installer did not follow plans
    4. Factory sent wrong or missing parts

I wonder how the original OP's issue was resolved (if it was). Hopefully they can check back in and let you know if they were successful in getting any traction that can help you with your issue. By the way I avoid Lowe's like the plague. And I'm not talking using them as a builder. I mean I won't even buy from them. I've had two horrible delivery experiences with them. Yes they contract that out but that's even worse. they have no quality control on the contractors they use. And their customer service department was just awful.
