New office layout recommendations please!!

Hi! We will be turning our storage (we’ll move everything out and even try to buy the desk tomorrow!)

into an office as it looks like we’ll be working from home at least part time for many years. It’s about 12 feet wide by 20 deep (but we would mostly use the portion closest to the window).

Any suggestions on layout (and if possible paint and desk colour)???

We love the modern farmhouse look. And note that the room is very dark; not a ton of natural light most of the day as it faces North-West.. Thanks!

Lighting would be my first change. Like a lot of it!! All over! Definitely repaint I’m also thinking that because your ceiling is uneven maybe even it out and add molding to it. Like even it out with moldings. Add a rug desk with a big chair on one side and two smaller on the other. Probably in the center of the room and then a small seating area. Maybe some couch chairs. Or a mini couch...

    O. And for paint I’d go light! Probably white. But if you want a bit of color a very pale blue would be beautiful

Nice big room. Prime the walls with white primer. You'll need a couple coats. An easy choice for coordinating white wall paint is to use the same color as the white trim paint. No fuss about which white goes with which other white.

Change the ceiling light bulbs to 3500 or 4000K "bright white" bulbs. Colors will look much less yellow.

Will you be sharing the office at the same time? A practical desk size for working 9 to 5 is 30 by 60 inches. Two people, two desks. Put one desk in front of the window for whoever prefers to look out.

Thank you @HU-187528210! By a « rug desk » you mean a desk on a rug?? Desk facing in the middle of the room facing the window? Where would the seating area/mini couch be? And i totally agree with light paint! Maybe a warm white? I wouldn’t want the pale blue to look gray.

Thank you @Elaine Doremus Resumes Written! For the plan, I totally understand and know you are right. My problem is that my husband DECIDED we are doing this now (in he wants to go buy the desk tomorrow) and I am here panicking trying to have a vision before we go...

I like the idea of facing the window, especially since we have a river at the back so it is a nice view. But facing window and still centered in the room right? How close to the window wall should it be? There is nothing else in that room, and facing the door at the back would be looking at the bathroom 😂

A storage unit will be helpful; but he won’t be meeting clients here. A glass top for the desk is a good idea! I will get a desk lamp, and are stand up lamps over?

I think one thing I’m worried about is choosing the right colour/style of desk!

There is no right style. There are lots of desk styles, choose what is practical and attractive. Choosing the same finish (dark brown, light brown, gray, black, white, whatever) as furniture in the rest of the house is a good guide. Or his choice may end up being purely practical based on actual availability- many things are back ordered these days.

Thanks @apple_pie_order! Okay so i will match paint and trim. Does it make a difference if the trim in the next room is a different white? The current trim everywhere is a beigy white (like a vanilla).

No only my husband will work there; I still work in our bedroom for now lol (i bought a tiny desk and put it in front of the window which overlooks the river :)) So if only one desk, centered? And okay and yes for the lightbulbs!

If this is his office and he's buying the desk tomorrow, why not let him run this show? Change the light bulbs to LEDs and let him do the rest. I don't even think I'd change the nice masculine paint color. Just upgrade the installed lights and plan to purchase additional floor and table lamps. I'm not sure you should even go with him. Let him have his way, keep the door closed if you can't stand what he comes up with. Think of it as his Office/Cave. Focus on your little bedroom office where you can be comfortable & productive!
