cold, bare and awkward!

I struggle so much with the asymmetric elements of these rooms and the severe lack of warmth and colour. The living room used to be the dining room but we switched recently thinking it would make it a bit cozier. We live in a big, old house and while we love the features I find it so hard to warm up. We are always hesitant to add to the walls because they are plaster so that leads me to constantly delay putting things up. Any and all recs are SO welcomed. I’m not attached to anything in the rooms. I hate the tv stand so it will certainly go. Do we mount tv? Switch rooms again? New couch? We just painted but I’m happy to switch it up again. Ahhh please help!

Looks to me like I am missing the wall in the LR that is opposite the cow pic. I'd like to see that wall and I'd like a straight-on picture of the wall with your fireplace so I can address the asymmetry you refer to.

I think your off to a great start. Your style is awesome. The house is beautiful I can see the gorgeous bones. I think the couch should be replaced with something maybe material white. With a lot of pillows, cable blankets , those knit looking poufs. We gotta later the textures in a space that feels cold. The paints not bad at all ...

The wall with tv is opposite the bull print. Last photo shows from window looking into open space.

Beautiful space. Love the chandelier! And stunning architectural detail on this house.

I like your ottoman; I am an ottoman lover, also. If you wanted a change of pace, this is a fave of mine. I think it would provide some contrast/visual interest with your sofa, and also work with some of the darker elements in the space, plus work with the style of the house. Very flexible piece.

And maybe something like these, for a splash of color.

Oh my goodness ... I agree with HU and Freedomplace! Your house is wonderful!

One idea for adding some warmth would be layering rugs. A woven one with something bolder on top.

I‘m picturing Freedom’s ottoman and pillow ideas with this, it’d look great! And it certainly doesn’t have to be this rug combo, but just to give an idea of more color and warmth:

    With Freedom’s ottoman:

Makes such a huge difference! Thank you so much for those suggestions.

Thank you, Jinx!! And I love your idea for layering rugs, also - and that rug is gorgeous! So you see the plum, too... It's not just me... 😂

Love the bones of the home. I think you need new couches. They are not in the style of the house, or the room. Try www.maidenhome.com - They've got nice quality pieces at good prices with lots of fabrics available.

So a floating TV unit on the wall would be a nice, minimal direction. I'd like to keep the lovely architectural details of your room exposed.

If you can, I would get a stander size couch. Your current one is oversized and blocks your archway.

We used to live in a big old house with plaster walls that would crack when we tried to hang pictures in the living room. Our solution was to wallpaper that small room with a solid color wallpaper the same color as the paint. Now that I think about it, the wallpaper may have had a very subtle texture. We were then able to hang pictures with no (visible) cracks.

I would install floor to ceiling curtains in both the living room and dining room and add coordinating pillows to the sofa.

That sectional sofa is too big for the room. You need a regular sofa. And although I don't think the current sofa is pink like Daisy says (I do see a hint of pink, but I think it's more beige), I do like pink with gray. Those are lovely sofas that Daisy suggested. And I do love pink sofas in general. My dream sofa would be a black leather Chesterfield with silver nail heads with hot pink velvet cushions and inside back. I've only seen it in one photo on Pinterest.

The house is absolutely amazing. Living room- walls look great. Sofa and rug are killing it. Consider a black & white patterned rug and a colorful, modern lines sofa. I'm seeing dark green velvet...

I posted some pink couches if you want to stick with pink. Even though I personally think a different color could work better with the rest of the room

I agree with those suggesting that a sofa would be a better fit for the room than the existing sectional.

And with the window in the corner, I'd consider a Roman shade instead of curtains, both to keep as much natural light during the daytime and to avoid the odd "squashed" look.

    Lovely house, great bones : ) .

To know if you should switch the LR and DR we would need to see a floor plan with dimensions.

To add warmth and color you actually need to add color.

Your sofa seems to be in decent condition, so I wouldn't recommend getting a new one unless you have the money to burn.

That said, if you are keeping the sofa you need to work with the pink beige color.

Right now your walls are a yellow beige and your accent wall is black.

I am going to start with the accent wall. It is too harsh for your home. It is great in modern spaces and clean color palettes, but you have neither of those elements.

    Pink Beige and black

Vs Pink beige and other dark colors

Now for the yellow. I selected this original picture because it demonstrates how pink pink beige is and why it doesn't work with yellow

How about something with a bit more gray, blue, green?

My favorite - SW Sea Salt

Blue, green, purple and burgundy work well with your sofa.

Although I love pink beige with lighter and darker pink beige - that layered neutral look, I do not recommend it unless you have no yellow beige or orange beige in your home because it will clash with the rest of your home.

BTW - Area carpets with blues often have a pink beige mixed into the pattern.
