Since this is a cottage and the trim and floors are dark i might choose light fixtures that lean a little rustic/casual...with some dark metal and of course great care to be sure lighting is directed where it is needed...the island /dining stools definitely need an upgrade for comfort and swivel...for the obvious reason ....this is a gathering...entertaining...dining ..spot where the action will always be centered...an unobtrusive window treatment over the sink will be needed at night for privacy and if the sun ever gets too bright there...something that doesnt cover the window frame as that is a wood feature for contrast..bamboo blinds usually look nice in this situation

Thank you both. I appreciate your opinions. I agree with the comfort of the barstools. Eventually I will upgrade. At this point in time we only use cottage during holidays, so I wanted barstools that would tuck under the 12" overhang of the counter to save floor space.

LED 4000K was something I was unfamiliar with, so thank you. I was thinking bamboo blinds too.

The ceiling is 8' and then slopes up to cathedral in the great room at 17'.

So let me throw one more thing out there.....I must use this piece of art (family obligation).....So what color lighting? Would black casual rustic lighting work?

The art seems to be a sail boat? So how about a rustic looking lantern style..in black it will definitely make the art look more integrated...the art will also benefit from something substantial underneath it ...a black cabinet that can be used for storage or a couch?..spray painting the stools black will also add a nice contrast with the white island...and going with the lighting

Have you thought about a lighter color frame for the art?

Art is art ... it doesn't have to match or relate to the lighting.

The floor is all the same color (one area there was cardboard down). Just poor quality lighting in the photos, thus the question.

I am looking at keeping this a cottage, so nothing dressy. Rustic/casual ideas are great.

I don't want an abundance of shadowing, so do I need to avoid glass? 2 large glass pendants was my original first choice. I really like the Rejuvanation Hood Pendant, but the dust? or glare?

I also like the mini echo pendant by Tech Lighting. Looks like easier to maintain and no glare?

So with a 90" X 55" island, would either of these work? Will I be sorry with the maintenance of glass globe?

And I like these. I would not have the maintenance of glass. Restoration Hardware Benson Pendant.....brushed nickel?

I actually like the ones you posted second, the black. I would not get glass, too much glare and cleaning.

I think a little shift of direction here is in order.... i would point out that pretty pendants add a lot to open spaces...li would pick the ones you think are pretty...not too intricate...just install them low enough to be reached by a hand held duster ...in a space like this dust will accumulate everywhere while you are gone ...so a duster will be needed on all the surfaces when you arrive ...we have been using this one forever ...dust just shakes off after use
