The Murphy bed needs to be easy to raise and lower, stable in both positions, and have a comfortable mattress. Essentially the bed itself is a platform, so you only need the mattress, not the box spring or foundation. But get a comfortable mattress and pillows. When we moved into our house it already had a Murphy bed in it. The bed stashes the pillows, and we can put it up with sheets and blankets on it, but we let it down and air it out if we are going to use it and it has been folded up for a long time. Ours has recessed lighting built into it, which is another plus. You will want another piece of furniture or a space in a closet to put the bedspread when the bed is folded up - usually that doesn't fit, unless you have a fitted one made.
