Paint the new unit to match the wall....otherwise, the “thing” on the wall will be the only thing you see. It will still be an eyesore, but better than the original wall unit. See how the base unit almost disappears because it matches the wall? That works.
Once the wall has been closed up and refinished, you can consider what else to put on the wall. In my opinion, one painting at eye level to a standing adult may be all you need....centered on the wall.

Wow - so much better than original ac in middle of wall! You decorated around the original unit which draws attention to it - the art, sconces & mantle like top piece on unit as what else could you do With mid wall placement? My thought is once old unit gone & wall repaired, new unit will fade from view bc it’s higher & not in direct line of vision eye level. Is there enough space to add a long narrow console type piece Along the wall? It would need to be open or shelving underneath to not block heat flow from baseboard radiators & the corner unit would need to go. Having things to look at will draw eye to them instead of seeing ac unit as main feature on wall. The wall art should be lower either way so it’s farther away from unit. If placing furnature along wall isn’t an option then I’d hang larger art & lower. . i don’t know if those high wall ac units are paintable but good idea if it is.
