Can I squeeze in a king bed

My husband and I are getting ready to get a new Tempurpedic mattress and we really want to upgrade to a king. We are currently in a queen. We do okay sleeping in it, but I'm a bed hog and starfish sleeper and my husband often finds himself on the edge of the bed (he's 6'2").The problem is our home is from the 1930s and the room is small and the shape is unique. The only wall our bed works on is a 9ish ft wall. Our queen fits in nicely now with room for two nightstands and a little room to spare. Currently our headboard blocks some of the window (see pics in separate comment below). We want a low profile headboard, which I've found, but they are mostly platform beds that just add too much width for this space. We've decided to build our own bed from scratch so we can have the narrowest possible bed frame plus a low profile headboard. We've taped the area off (see pic with tape) and it will just fit with walking space and allowing us to open the closet door, plus the nightstands will both fit in.Visually, I know a queen will look better. But, what are your thoughts on squeezing in a king in here? My husband is a graphic designer and mocked up a bed based on where we had the tape outline. And just FYI, the rug will go. My plan is to get a runner to put in front of the bed instead if we make the switch.

Yes, we currently have a tempurpedic, but it's a first generation model and we're wanting an upgrade. I love it personally, but it does take a few weeks to get used to it you're used to a traditional mattress.

If you know you'd be more comfortable sleeping everyday in a king, get one. As you said, you can simplify your furniture and accessories to fit. More important is nightly comfort.

Sarah, see if the following is any help. I do agree with C Martin regarding nightly comfort. My husband is also 6' 2" and I'm 5' 10". We've always had a CA KIng.

"Based off of the most commonly purchased king, the Standard King, the minimum room size according to Ehow.com is 12 feet by 9 feet 10 inches. Most designers will tell you that you need a minimum of 30 inches all around the bed for movement. Although this is only a suggestion, you can use this measurement as a rule of thumb when determining if your bedroom can accommodate a King-sized bed.

When beginning to shop for a King-sized bed, you’re going to want to take in consideration the size of the bed around the mattress as well as the mattress size. You may be purchasing a platform bed that hugs the mattress and is the size expected. You may also purchase a bed that adds a lot at the end of the bed, such as drawers and storage, which will make it larger than expected.

There isn’t a specific standard size for a room but a minimum size suggestion because all rooms differ so greatly. Even if you compare a room to another room that is identical in size, you may have differently placed windows, closets, and vents for heating and cooling.

Some examples of bedrooms that have worked well to hold a King-sized bed are as follows. A bedroom that is 14 feet by 19 feet can comfortably hold a King-size Bed, two nightstands on either side of the bed, a love seat, ottoman, TV stand and a dresser. Another bedroom that is smaller at 12 feet by 12 feet can hold a King-sized bed with two nightstands and a dresser."

Get the king bed, good sleep is important!

Have you slept full nights on a Tempurpedic? Stayed at a b&b that had one, and could not sleep on it, felt like I was sleeping on sand. Would not buy one. Hopefully, you have and like it.

mdln-It takes about 30 days to get used to sleeping on a Tempurpedic after sleeping on a conventional mattress.

Just coming back to update anyone who sees this. We did get a king bed and we LOVE it! We ended up building our own bed from scratch and we LOVE that too!! I have been sleeping incredibly well and so has my husband. The bigger size does not affect the look of the room in my opinion. My advice- if you have even just enough space (like we did), go for it!
