The twig shot looks like it might be Liquidambar - if you show more material it should be easier to tell. Likewise with the trunk shot, the rest of the tree should be shown before it is decided here that it is definitely any particular species.

Pretty hard to tell. Whole tree(s), twigs if available (maples are opposite, sweetgum alternate) and more fallen leaves need seen. From leaf it does seem alternate -- if so, not a maple.

a crushed liquidamber leaf has a very distinctive scent... but i cant recall what it is.. something in dads old workshop.... turpentine???

though i dont know if that old leaf will still have it

It doesn't quite look like liquidambar to me. Leaf tips tend to be more pointed in liquidambar.

Both the bark and the leaf look like liquidambar to me. Leaf shape is variable on sweet gums....some do have very pointy tips; others have much more rounded lobes.

Leaf stalks in twig shot are alternately arranged. Original post states the trunk is from one kind of tree and the leaf another.
