They always look scraggly this time of year. I almost lost mine last year (I only have two), until I dug them up, washed off the roots, and put them into pots, bringing them indoors during cold spells They just barely made it through the winter, but this year, they were both gorgeous. Now I have cuttings going from both of them, and plan to add more colors next year.

One tip is not to let them go to seed. Deadheading keep them from beginning the death cycle.

Prune off bad parts, they never will recover to any satisfactory state. If you do not see any green where you cut, then cut more.
