Has anyone done or seen any basement that’s half finished?

We have a huge unfinished basement. My husband being an engineer loves that there are no dry walls or ceilings that obscure the elements of wiring, etc. And if anything were to go wrong, it’s no mystery. But I do want kids to play there comfortably in an aesthetically appealing area.

finishing the whole basement would anyway be unnecessary and expensive, so I was wondering if we can we finish a part of the basement? I have never seen a picture showing only a part finished and the rest unfinished. Do people sometimes do that?

Extremely common where I live. My present house’s basement has 2 bedrooms, an office, a family room and 2 bathrooms nicely finished and very livable. There is also a large closet, a storeroom, and a workshop area in my basement which have bare concrete floors and walls with open ceilings and wiring visible overhead.

My 1973 house has a basement that is 1/2 finished and 1/2 not. Previous owners put up paneling that was so popular in the 70's down the middle to make 2 long rooms. Each has a window. One side was painted in textured paint that was so popular in the 70's plus carpeting. It was a play room. Now it has shelves with toys for the grandchildren plus I can keep my ironing board set up all the time for sewing and quilting projects. The other half has cement walls and floor. DH work bench is in there. One wall has raw wood shelves to store cwap. The furnace and crawl space are in this half. Each half has it's own lights and switches.

IMO the only way to do this well is to devide the space and finish one part and use the rest for storage with a door on the storage room to hide it. Any other way will always look like you ran out of time, energy or money or all of them.
