How to manage window companies and bids?

I've been lurking on here for a long time and I've consistently seen people having initial window bids for projects then having major brands drop their bid/price over time in order to get the job. I don't know if it's cut and dry, but what sort of a margin is there in these bids that can be negotiated?
We're sending out 5 bids soon and I'm just interested to know what negotiating power I have as the customer. This is a new build with a 100k window budget.

Dealer and brand dependent, no set amount or percentage. There is no set formula. Be upfront and tell people you are getting other pricing. Tell them that that you are expecting their "Best & Final" pricing up front as you will make your choice from the bids presented once leveled to be certain all specs match.

You have quite a bit of power. I would focus on the good bids and negotiate with them . How much room they have to move is really hard to say , on a 100k it safe to say they have some and would be willing to move.

Find a reputable window company and negotiate please. If I knew a potential customer was seeking 4 other bids, she'd never get one from me.

It would be foolish not to get multiple bids on a 100k budget and if I were selling windows I’d love the chance.

Good feedback above. Unfortunately there is no set amount. One company may be set up with an ultra high "retail" price, but offer 40-50% discounts at times. The next guy may start his pricing much more aggressive and only offer 10% discounts.

With all of that said, get a couple quotes and/or do your research. Sites like this, customer reviews, etc will give you a general gauge of what a normal price range is. I'd suggest focusing less on the promotion or discount, and more on the final number regardless of how it was reached.

Being a dealer, , contractor and consumer I could give good and bad stories either way. Obviously you want to compare the same things with the same brand and line of window, weigh the differences between different brands and different lines with in those brands, material types, compare reputations and install methods if they are also doing that And Consult with your contractor . I have never been insulted by being asked if I could do better on a price and have never felt out of line asking for a better price. Obviously you want be polite and sincere and not insult. If you were to say “ I really like your product and you company , how much better Could you do on your price? “ Most reasonless dealers would not be insulted unless they are ? Would love to here more about your project. What products are looking at? Is your window quote to be for materials only or install and materials? Are you playing the contractor? It is not typical for a homeowner asking these questions on a New build with a 100k window budget.

Toddinmn - Thanks for your comment. Thank you to everyone who has responded.

So I'm a rabbit hole type of person. I love to dig into the weeds on things and of everything the windows are something I care a lot about. Back in the day (college) I used to build condos for a sub-par company and I learned a lot about what not to do.

Our builder was happy to let me run with the bids and choices thus far on fenestration. I don't want to step on his toes and beyond making sure we get good enough R-value on insulation, after that I'm not as picky on everything else.

Yesterday we did an initial meeting with our local Marvin rep. Really liked him and what he had to offer. We're looking at a mix of the Modern with slim sightlines and some of their other products. His initial guestimation was that we'd end up around 130k, which I expected given some of the glass walls we're putting in. I had figured we'd be between 100-150 including sliders/doors.

I've looked at some of the Anderson premium stuff as well, I just really struggle dealing with HomeDepot or Lowes on a window budget like that.

I've wanted a good lift and slide for a 10ft by 12ft opening and that's next on my list for research. I know there are a lot of good companies for those like fleetwood, western, weiland etc..

The architect is finishing up the final plans now so once they're done I'll be able to get moving on the window piece of the build.

I welcome any and all advice here as this is the first house we're designing and having built. I've spent hours going through the comments on Houzz and other places to get a good idea of what we want and should expect.

I would certainly agree with that statement. Sound like you are on a good path. For the L&S you may want to add Arcadia to the mix as they make a nice unit as well.

Note to Montana Build: look at both the Lift and Slide and Multi Slide doors. Lift and Slide are quite a bit more expensive and have some unique features. For the money difference, the Multi Slide offers 90% of what the LnS does and should be fine. Installation on these large doors is super critical so don't cut any corners. If your builder has never put one in, see if he is okay with getting an experienced installer. In the end, you will be much happier. Good luck!

I feel like we’re making progress. For me I have salesperson at Home depot that is very good and use to work for Andersen and I know the sales rep very well. There are also lumber yards here that sell Andersen.

East Bay 10 has some sound advice on the install . Those doors can be a learning experience. Windows are pretty straightforward but it mice to have someone familiar with the product.
