If you want a bookcase in the bedroom, you should have it! I like the wood as is.

Depends on how the bedroom is used and who is using it.

Someone in school might well get use out of a sturdy bookcase in the bedroom as well as a desk and chair.

I agree please no more gray.....keep the bookcase; use it for books, or add doors or buy baskets to put stuff in...I think I see two mirrors on your walls, Why not add some art with color instead?

The paint color for the furniture is more black than gray. Would you suggest another color in an effort to update the furniture?

I don't think that paint will actually accomplish an 'update' to the furniture; it will simply change the color. I actually like the wood, and wood is really trending in a big way, so if it were mine I would not paint it. I would instead embrace a layered style including natural elements and colors, mixing your black, cream, and gray with textural elements (basketry, a layered rug on the carpet, more natural-looking/bohemian inspired throw pillows, for example).

And yes, I would keep the bookcase and fill it with books!
